Is surface rust on steel fence panels actually a problem before galvanizing, or do people worry too much?

Is surface rust on steel fence panels actually a problem before galvanizing, or do people worry too much?

Saw these steel fence panels waiting for finishing and noticed some light surface rust.

Curious what people in fencing/fabrication think:

  • Does light rust before galvanizing matter?
  • Would this concern you?
  • Any bad experiences with rust after galvanizing or powder coating?

A quick guide to Zinc Coating thickness for anti-climb fences (Don't get cheated on the lifespan)

Hey guys, I’ve been working in the fence manufacturing sector in Anping (the wire mesh hub) for years, and I see a lot of overseas buyers getting ripped off because they don't understand galvanized specs.

When you are buying anti-climb 358 mesh or 3D curved fencing for coastal or industrial areas, "galvanized" is not enough. You need to know the actual zinc weight. Here is a quick breakdown based on my shop experience:

  • Electro-galvanized (15-20g/m²): Only good for indoor or temporary barriers. If you put this outside, expect rust in 6–12 months.
  • Hot-dipped galvanized (Regular: 40-60g/m²): Okay for dry inland environments. Lasts about 3-5 years.
  • Heavy Hot-dipped galvanized (200-300g/m²): This is what you need for real high-security projects. It complies with ASTM standards and can easily stand 10+ years without rust.

When we run AutoCAD simulations for border or heavy-industrial projects, post wall thickness and zinc loading are the top two variables for wind resistance and longevity.

If you are dealing with a supplier, always ask for a SGS/BV salt spray test report before paying the deposit, or have them test the wire diameter after welding, not before.

Hope this helps anyone preparing a fencing bid! Let me know if you have any questions about mesh tensile strength or post fittings in the comments.
