Don’t know if I should start my own Fence Company or not.

Im wanting to leave my job to start my own business. Ive had this “business” idea in my head for months whether it should be building fences, get into general contracting, building decks/porches really just something. And fence/deck building has been in my mind. Now I am a military veteran and I live in a small town in southeast Georgia near Brunswick. I got some injuries while in the service like back and neck problems as well as shoulder problems. What I’m trying to ask is if this is a good move? Like is there any regrets of starting one? Is there really money in this line of work? And is it physically laborious on the body? Any advice or tips??

How would you replace?

This fence is falling apart, but the posts are set into a giant trough of concrete. No clue how deep, but I have no interest in renting a jackhammer and then lifting all this concrete out into a trailer by hand, then unloading at the dump.

My current plan is to cut the posts at the bottom. Then use those metal brackets to bolt the post to the concrete a few inches over.

The problem is the concrete isnt level. What would you use to shim under rhe metal bracket? I'm afraid wood will rot.

What's the best approach?

How to treat cedar post

I'm putting in cedar posts in the lowest point of my yard and due to recent heavy rain, there's a lot of water at the bottom of my hole (hole is approximately~32" deep, fence will be 4' picket). What's the best way to prep the post to sit here? It's not always going to be this wet, but it's more than I was expecting.

Professional opinion requested on gate build.

Image shows exact areas in question.

I don't know anything about fence gates, that's why I am posting in this group because you guys are the professionals. Could you tell me if the board with the handle on it that's been tapered from larger to smaller is normal and is that something you would accept if someone built a gate for you? Second, none of the boards are even on the top. Is that normal? I paid for this, Is it acceptable, or should I ask them to come back and fix anything?

What type of nail gun do I need for fencing?

I need to replace some feather edged boards on my fence panels as they are warped. I’m thinking a nail gun would be best suited to secure them with the fence panels in place. What type of nail gun would I need?

How much?

How much do y’all think a new fence for this side of my home would be? We have an aggressive dog next door and our dogs keep going at it. Apparently the dog knocked down the old fence before we moved in. Preferably an 8ft. That’s the tallest our local code will allow. The red fence is ours. DFW area. Fence is 16’ along the house and 64’ along the yard.

WUI-Compliant, budget-friendly fence privacy options

We are looking to add privacy to an existing 6-foot wrought iron ornamental fence (retrofit?). This is in an Austin Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zone. Most of the fence is within 10’ of our home or a neighbor’s home.

Most of the privacy screens (like PVC or fabric) we've found are not WUI-compliant. We don't want to replace the fence because of the cost.

We also found some metal decorative panels on Home Depot that are quite expensive for the length that we need. Not sure where to find more affordable options.

Has anyone found an affordable, fire-rated/ignition-resistant solution to add privacy to an existing fence?

Would really appreciate any pointers. Thanks in advance.

Discolored pickets

I’m building a fence and got treated pickets delivered from my local Menards. Probably about 100 of them have this black discoloration. Just wondering if it’s mold or from the treatment process and if it will go away once exposed to sun or if I need to return the pickets. I guess I don’t mind having to spray some sort of fence cleaner but not if they’re rotten/compromised. Any advice would be great!

Any conceivable reason for this counter contour?

Saw this in a neighborhood I drove through, it sticks out like a sore thumb and I had to stop to take a picture. From my perspective there was no apparent reason for the vertical meander, it just looks comically mid-designed and installed.

I haven’t done any fencing work but I’m curious if anyone can come up with a possible reason for this. I would not be able to stand looking at this on my property every day!

How to get some more privacy on my property?

I have a property with basically no privacy. Both of my neighbors' houses are on the property lines if you look at the image. How do I build a fence to get some more privacy??? Their windows are literally on the property lines, and from their window, you can directly see into my back yard.

Am I allowed to build a fence right up blocking their window? Location: Ontario.

Pic 2~3 is the property on the west side, and pic 4 is the property on the east side.

Got the opportunity to install some New Tech Wood composite fence

Super easy install. You Tube has an installation video. Personally i would consider this product more of a decorative barrier than a security fence.

Fence post next to house

I'm installing a small section of split rail fence with it ending next to my house. I was hoping the footer would be far deeper than it is, but it's only about 8" deep and extends about 15 inches from the house.

I was trying to figure out the best approach for the post, but found conflicting information when I searched online. I tried searching in this group, but all I could find was advice for privacy fences.

Obviously, I don't want to attach anything to the house. Is it acceptable to use something like a Simpson bracket to attach the post to the footer? My understanding was to absolutely not drill into the footer. Or would it be better to poor concrete on top of the footer and attach to that? Most of the advice I saw was to install the post the roughly 20" from the house and overhang the top rails. But that's not really possible here.

The 3 top rails will only be about 2.5' long to another end post for a gate. So it doesn't have to bear much weight. I live on the Piedmont of North Carolina. Any help will be appreciated!

Joining to a previous fence

Been in my house for close to 7 years and the previous neighbors added a wood fence on the one side to keep the neighbors at bay dividing between the two houses. I wanna add a small piece of fencing so the neighbors next to me can’t look in the backyard from the front but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to join a corner piece for my dog ear fence panel. Open to suggestions

Post removal

With a power washer, and farm jack, removing a fence post takes about 20 mins. I am in very heavy clay soil. Flush your post (in my case the wind did the job) drill a hole in the center and screw in the largest lag eye bolt you can. Use a wand with a orbital head. Start blasting around where you think the concrete is and commence to blasting all the soil away and down as far as your wand goes. Keep going until you have opened up a good amount around and all the way down. Then attach farm jack and pull out, it will pull easy. Once out you already have a nice hole filled with water. Set and plumb new post, fill with cement. Dig with the wand after the old post is out if you don't like the depth or dia of the hole. Removing the post was about 15 mins or so. It's a lil messy, but sure saves hard digging work.

Horizontal fence. Is 1"x4"x8' with 4x4 posts bad idea? How will this hold up, sagging, storms...etc? I'm keeping the gate vertical, but smaller 4' (old gate was 5' wide). Thank you for input.

With y'all's advice, my new gate

I wanted to thank all of yall who helped me fix the gate that was installed on my new fence. The contractor ran off and didn't even technically finish.

With y'all's advice I dug and moved over the steel post on the right so that both sides of the bracket would connect to the fence. I did continue with my plan to shift one picket from the gate onto the post on the left so that bracket would also be secured on both sides.

I then removed the middle horizontal piece and framed out the gate, installing the diagonal support the whole distance per your suggestion. I did add the middle part back as a hinge screws into it

And for some minor upgrades, I added my preferred vintage style latch and repurposed part of the catch bolt from the original latch to use as a lever to secure the latch once I pull the door shut. I also added the steel caps for the posts.

I'll be painted the silver screws on the hardware to match!

It's not perfect but thanks to yall I feel a lot more confident my gate will hold up and the fence will withstand the elements. So thank you so much!

Can this be removed in one piece?

I assumed you could remove this panel in one piece by prying it from the posts, but I can’t seem to find any clear points on where it’s attached.

We need to add some additional depth to the posts so we can fit a shed into the space. We want avoid having to pay someone to come and do it if possible. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Replacing two gates

Building them 100% from scratch. Will have 2x4s flat under where the 6 in hinges are. Are the hinges big enough and is 1.5 lag screws sufficient? I know the frame may be a bit overdone.
