Getting a bit more gas from the North Sea doesn't matter climate-wise | New Scientist

From the article with some paraphrasing of my own:

Some people talk about the UK government’s current policy of not approving more licences for exploration in the North Sea as if it will reduce the amount of oil and gas that is burned, and thus help limit how much more carbon dioxide ends up in the atmosphere. But it won’t. All it will do is change where the oil and gas that gets burned comes from.

What does matter is burning less fossil fuel. That means things such as getting more electricity from renewable sources, and more vehicles and heat pumps running on that electricity.

The UK currently meets a significant amount of it's natural gas requirements from imported US LNG. North Sea gas emissions are only 15 per cent lower than those from LNG and so using North Sea gas should lead to a small drop in carbon emissions. We also get some of our gas from Norway via pipelines, and the production emissions of this are even lower than those of North Sea gas but realistically new gas extraction in the North Sea would offset imported LNG rather than imports from Norway.

On the other side of the coin: more drilling is not going to bring down energy prices in the UK. North Sea oil and gas is sold at global market prices, and there’s not enough oil or gas left in the North Sea to make a dent in those prices. It's also not going to make a lot of money for the UK. Almost all of oil and gas has already been extracted from the fields and so what little remains is now expensive to extract. It would be profitable now with the attack on Iran and the Russian invasion of Ukraine but if they came to an end it could even cease to be profitable.

What happens in the North Sea just doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things – more drilling is neither a climate catastrophe, nor an economic panacea.

Exposing The Solid State Donut Battery. It's Over.

Shock, horror: Donut labs lied about their new miracle battery.

If you've been following the drama, have a watch to see how it concludes.

An r/conspiracy poster was asked to testify before the Senate

Today a poster from r/conspiracy was asked by Rand Paul to testify before the Senate on allegations of a "deep state" cover-up regarding the origins of COVID-19. Specifically he accused Fauci of orchestrating the CIA coverup. Who could have known that Fauci was this powerful?

He is supposedly a CIA whistleblower but from his Reddit history... Well let's just say I'm embarrassed for Rand Paul. This is nuts.

In a statement, Liz Lyons, CIA Director of Public Affairs, responded by saying:

> “The Committee acted in bad faith by subpoenaing an Agency officer for testimony today without notifying CIA, despite having already obtained closed-door testimony from the individual previously. The witness testifying today is not appearing as a whistleblower in pursuit of the truth, but instead in response to the subpoena issued by Chairman Paul.

> This proceeding amounts to nothing more than dishonest political theater masquerading as a congressional hearing. As the CIA has already assessed, COVID-19 most likely originated from a lab leak, and efforts to undermine that conclusion are disingenuous.”
