SR And The Dark Night Of The Soul

(33M) I have practice SR on and off for 3 years now. I’ve also been deeply immersed in psychology for some time now, especially Jungian psychology, the shadow, individuation, the Dark Night of the Soul, and the relationship between the psychological and the supernatural, and naturally I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how all of this connects with semen retention. What I’m beginning to see is that SR can create a very interesting bridge between the psychological and the spiritual. When you stop indulging in sexual gratification as an automatic outlet, the sexual impulse doesn’t simply disappear. You become more conscious of it. The impulse arises, you experience the tension, instead of immediately discharging it you observe it, and through that observation you can start asking what is actually underneath the desire. Is it sex, or is it loneliness, validation, connection, insecurity, escape, or something deeper? For me, this has made integration feel somewhat easier because I’m learning to experience an impulse without immediately acting it out. That is where I think the connection with the Dark Night becomes really interesting. When old ways of regulating yourself begin to fall away, you are forced to encounter parts of yourself that you may have previously avoided, and SR can remove one of those outlets. What people sometimes describe as “sexual transmutation” can therefore be understood psychologically as taking something that was previously unconscious and making it conscious, then allowing that energy to find expression through training, creativity, work, spirituality, relationships, or simply greater awareness. At the same time, I don’t want to reduce everything to psychology either, because part of what has fascinated me throughout this journey is the possibility that there is a deeper spiritual or even supernatural dimension to these experiences that psychology alone may not fully explain. I’m still exploring that rather than claiming to have the answer. What matters to me is that retention seems to have created more space between desire and action, and in that space I’m encountering myself differently. The goal isn’t to become afraid of sexuality or convince myself that desire is bad. It’s to become capable of holding desire without being controlled by it. So instead of simply asking how many days I can retain, I’m starting to ask what I’m becoming capable of holding, what is being revealed to me through that process, and what this energy is asking me to become. I’m curious if anyone else in this community has experienced SR as something that opened a deeper psychological or spiritual process rather than simply being a practice of abstinence or a “hack” for generating attraction from the opposite sex. It's helping my shadow work and integration for sure. Also my connection with the divine. Maybe the attraction people experience is not the point itself, but one of the possible external reflections of an internal shift in presence, confidence, discipline, and the way we carry ourselves.

Shot out to this new deli in Greenpoint. Solid sandwiches and burgers. Nice spot, lots of options.
