There is a weird advertising campaign going around TikTok. (Possible astroturfing?)
This post will be primarily talking about Radiohead TikTok, but it may be going on under other platforms as well. This is based off of observations I have made recently about the types of videos that are being pushed to me and others. And I have had people agree that this does seem like a form of astroturfing. And by no means am I blaming the band for this.
I have noticed recently that there are TikTok accounts that portray themselves as huge/mega Radiohead fans. They will post performance clips, lyrical snippets, and typical appealing Gen Z content. In-between these posts, they post videos that look professionally done from the perspective of someone in Motion Picture House. As if they were working for Motion Picture House, but their bio doesn't say anything about advertising.
Something that looks like an eager fan could have posted it, but, I really doubt there's multiple eager fans re-attending Motion Picture House. The accounts bio will often say "radiohead fan". This is incredibly misleading to actual fans.
These videos will get 1,000 or so likes and a couple comments. The comments feel incredibly artificial, like they have been made by bots. All of the comments regardless of the video seem like they are made up of bots. Usually in TikTok comments, people spam stickers. It's mostly just emojis, and it's really strange.
I also noticed that not many of my mutual repost these videos despite them being directly tagged to the Radiohead fandom, which is odd considering most videos I come across get upwards to 200 reposts in my mutual circle alone.
I know there was a similar thing to this with the music artist "sombr". His PR team would create planted fan accounts that Gen-Z-ified clips and content, just like these fake Radiohead fan accounts do. I don't know if this is PR or if it's Motion Picture House themselves, but these videos definitely feel planted and fake.
Seperate to Motion Picture House, I have also noticed mass-produced template style videos where it'll mention some Gen Z quote like "this and crying" or whatever and it'll have a whole bunch of TikTok "sad" music. Most of them are the exact same list but with different faces, and it's very unsettling to me. It will have a Radiohead song, a Panchiko song, and some other music I don't know, but recognize across all these templated videos.
Now, you may be wondering, "why does this matter"? It matters to me, because a core factor of Radiohead I feel is authenticity and brushing off PR. Why would they all of a sudden be astroturfing? I don't know. The band might not even aware that this is happening. I only started to notice the accounts after Motion Picture House started to debut, so it could have something to do with them. In the rules it says no links, but if you've been on Radiohead TikTok, you've probably already seen these videos. I don't know. What do you guys think?
no wonder my education benefits don't go through.
"Individual manual reviews and status updates are no longer provided". great. probably replaced by some AI that cannot read my infinite campus portal, my transcript, or my school id. great. what do i try? i've been a github student for 3 years now and i rely on my benefits heavily for education.
