Hi all,

I drive a 2008 Mercedes with around 123k miles on it, and it has recently developed an engine management light issue. I originally bought the car for £1,200.

I’m currently trying to save and prepare to buy a house soon, but I also do a lot of mileage, so I really rely on having a car.

I’ve taken it to two mechanics, and both suggested it may not be worth repairing, as it could require major engine work. One mechanic advised that I could continue driving it for now, provided I’m not too concerned about the engine management light.

At the moment, I’m considering a few options but I’m unsure what the best route forward is:

1. Take out a bank loan and buy a newer car for around £12k
2. Buy a similar car again for around the £2k mark and run it into the ground
3. Keep driving my current car until it becomes a bigger issue

I’d really appreciate any thoughts or advice from people who may have been in a similar situation.
