This is my first grow. Rye berries as the grain CVG as the substrate (golden teachers) what can I do to get a better product next time? All the pins coming through the substrate have white caps and chalky stocks.

What went wrong here? All the pins that made it to the surface look white (golden teachers) and the stalks look choppy. This was my first grow. Rye berries for grain and CVG for substrate.
