Distillery Only

I visited the Balcones Distillery, Waco Texas, back in December and they had this bottle as a distillery only selection. After tasting it I decided I needed to get 2 bottles. It’s an 8 year old, from central Texas, single barrel rye. Let me tell you this thing is amazing!

Age: 8 years

ABV 57.5%

Nose: this is a dessert! Chocolate nibs, dark fruits and sweet raisin, burnt vanilla.

Mouth feel: oily and viscous

Palate: dark fruits, plumbs and cherries initially that evolved into that classic Rye spice and pepper. Then it evolves into dark chocolate nibs.

Finish: medium long more chocolate nips that morphs into lite oak and leather.

Overall this is an excellent pour and I would give it an 8.5 out of 10.

Walmart Find

When Walmart has EH Taylor Straight Rye for $67 you don’t pass on it, especially when it’s the last bottle. Small batch is everywhere and I remember that being impossible to find a year ago. The times they are a changing.

They did 250 barrels and bottled them at 117.76 proof. For less than $50 I figured why not? I enjoy the Evan Williams BiB for a low cost pour, hopefully this is better.

I will start by saying that if you see this bottle at MSRP then get it, it’s absolutely worth that. Secondly I think this bottle was way over hyped. It’s good but it’s not mind blowing. At MSRP I think it’s a good bottle and I will get another one. Initially I didn’t like this bottle that much, and I know it’s because I had higher expectations because of the hype. Once I set realistic expectations for this bottle I really started to enjoy it more. For me this was a good example of how hype and reality can affect my perception of a bottle.
