Timmy No Breaks vs Keegan Campbell
To say that each comedian uses either of their comedic inspirations equally would be unfair…
From my perspective, Timmy is a direct descendent of Dice, yet the thing that endears an audience to him is his open awareness of this fact. Timmy takes Dice, dials it up to 11, and is able to make something new… His jokes aren’t jokes that Dice would do, making Timmy a unique comedian.
To contrast, I find that Keegan is unable to transform Mitch. That is NOT to say he isn’t a good impressionist. In fact, he is a GREAT impressionist with a good ability to write stylistically similar jokes. But as I previously referenced with Timmy, Keegan denies all references to Mitch and is unable to represent Mitch’s humor in a transformative and unique way. His denial of lineage just rings hackish to many comedy fans who grew up on Hedberg.
I don’t know if this makes sense. I’ve had many conversations with my brother about these two, why/ how they are different. What does it mean to reference a comedian? And at what point does reference become theft?
Maybe I’m overthinking it… and
maybe that ruins comedy. Ope!
