Does time in the crib count as awake time?

My LO took 50 minutes to fall asleep in the crib. This is the first time this happens recently. I know if he keeps doing that then he needs a longer wake window. We were at a festival and came home and I put him down right away so he probably was overstimulated and couldn’t sleep.

I’m wondering if that 50 minutes counts as awake time? Should I shorten any of the other wake windows for the rest of the day or put him down earlier? He will be short on daytime sleep because I will wake him up at his usual time if he’s still asleep to stay on the same schedule as much as possible.

Need help with sleep training

We started sleep training at 4 months with the chair method and noticed that was not working because his cries were intense each night. Switched to Ferber and each check in made his cry worse. We were working with a sleep consultant at the time who told us at the end of the two week plan that he has FOMO and the cries will reduce as he gets older.

He is now 5 months old. We had a few nights with minimal crying but a lot of the time was around 30-60 mins of crying. Sometimes that looks like on and off crying and sometimes it is scream crying for majority of it. We did some schedule changes and noticed when his last nap is 15 mins it helps.

He is on 2/2.5/2.75/3. We got to a point last week where his crying was 20-30 mins. Still a lot but we were happy to see improvement.

Get about 2.5-3hrs of daytime sleep and 9.5-10.5 overnight. Even with schedule changes he still cries intensely. When I was putting him to sleep he still takes a long time and whines and is very squirmy so I’m thinking it’s his temperament.

If that’s the case, is it better to wait until he’s older to try again or should we keep going at it? It’s been a little over a month of this. He’s got the skill because he can do it for naps just fine. Just bedtime is a struggle. When he’s asleep he’s usually good for the night with no wakings or minimal wakings.

Need a plan starting tonight

I’ve posted on this sub several times for answers and expressed concerns regarding my LOs sleep. He just turned 5 months.

We had family visit and it included lots of on the go naps and his crying at bedtime was so intense that I’ve been putting him to sleep. He used to nap like a champ independently but now he also needs me.

We are back home and can either go back to independent sleep or take a break from here. I’m not sure if a break would be a good idea and coming back to this when he’s older.

Help with decision moving forward

My LO just turned 5 months yesterday. We’ve been sleep training for a month and I can count on one hand how many good nights we’ve had since. Naps clicked well but bedtime was always a massive struggle.

we are on the following schedule: 2/2.5/2.75/3

He cries anywhere from 30-60 mins and scream cries. Our DWT was 7:30 which was putting him to bed at 8:30 but we noticed when a bedtime lands around 8pm he was going to bed smoother. We tried to consistently aim for an 8pm bedtime but then he was still struggling.

We’ve been putting him to sleep recently because we are at a cottage with family and there are other kids and him scream crying was just too much. Now it’s been going into his naps which he used to take just fine.

Putting him to sleep made me remember that even prior to sleep training, he always struggled with bedtime. He would whine and squirm even with me while I try to put him to sleep. So I know now bedtime is just a struggle for him. The only difference is when I put him to sleep he whines but in the crib he scream cries.

We are contemplating if we should wait and try again when he’s older or sticking it out. We recognize putting him to sleep is going backwards and know if we want Independent sleep we need to commit to not putting him to sleep.

Does it sound like a temperament thing and we should wait until he’s older? I’m not sure what to do but this long of scream crying every night is not the answer :(

We did it with my first and it worked so well so I know sleep training works.

Need help before giving up

TLDR: should we try something else before giving up?

Background: LO will be 5 months old in a couple of days and we started sleeping training at 4 months old. We worked with a sleep consultant doing the chair method and realized that was not working so did CIO. He was crying most nights for 45-60 mins. My sleep consultant said to keep pushing through it because he’s learning a new skill. Eventually she suggested slightly increasing WWs but leaving the last one short because they get over tired easily.

All to say, after posting on this sub, we realized his WWs were really short.

We are now on 2.25/2.5/2.5/3-3.25

Sometimes he sleeps well and sometimes (most nights) he struggles a lot to sleep on the same schedule and similar daytime sleep.

We account for 11 hour nights (wakes up 7:30, aim to put him down 8:30).

I can’t take the crying anymore. It’s been a month of this and I’m sure my LO is tired too.

Is there anything you can suggest that can help with the crying? Could it be his temperament and maybe it doesn’t work for him?

Need help with naps!

My LO will be 5 months next week. He was generally napping really well. Would take 1-2 minutes to sleep and would sleep between 1-2 hours for naps. We were on these wake windows 2/2.25/2.5/3. Yesterday he started crying 10-15 minutes until he slept for his first two naps so I thought let me try increase it today. So today we did 2.25/2.5 and the first nap he cried for 15-20 minutes and only napped 30 minutes and second nap he cried for an hour without sleeping so we’re doing a reset now and will attempt a crib nap again in 20 minutes.

What could the change in naps be??

By the clock bedtime?

My LO will be 5 months next week. We are currently doing 2/2.25/2.5/3.

I noticed when his bedtime lands at 8pm he goes down easily but when it’s later or earlier he cries a lot. Is it possible that his internal clock is set at 8pm and I should stop tracking the last WW?

Looking for help for my 4.5 month old!

We were working with a sleep consultant when my son tuned 4 months to start sleep training bedtime and naps. At the time the recommended WWs were 1.25/1.5/1.5/1.5/1.5. He actually did well the first two days with not too much crying so we thought it was working. 3rd night he had a terrible time but I read that could be normal. He really started to fight his 3rd nap so I asked if he needed more awake time and she suggested 1.5/1.75/1.75/1.75/1.75 and If the last nap is due at 6:30 to skip it and do bedtime.

He was struggling, he would cry for at least an hour every night and I told her I think he might need more awake time and she kept saying it could be that he’s getting sleepy during the routine and some days told me to put him down at 1.5 because they need a shorter WW for their last one. It was a two week program and towards the end she said do 1.75/2/2/2/2 and it helped for two nights and then we were back at the 1 hour crying.

I posted on here for help because I was so stressed with how things were going and knew it wasn’t right. Everyone suggested he needs more awake time. I brought it up to her and she pretty much said that’s ridiculous at his age and to either follow the plan or not. So I decided to stick it out. We ended the two weeks with still 1 hour crying and she concluded that he has FOMO and it will get better.

I decided to increase his windows as suggested by some on here and we are now on a 3 nap schedule of 2/2.25/2.5/2.75. The first day we did this he cried for 15 minutes on and off. It felt like a miracle after all those awful nights. Yesterday he napped quite a bit 3.75 (I had to wake him up each time) and then we decided to try 3 hours for his last wake window but he was extremely fussy like way more than usual so we put him down at the 2.75 mark and he crashed immediately.

Today we decided to do 2.75 for the last WW and he cried on and off for 40 minutes before sleeping.

His day started at 6 which is early for him (we normally wake him up at 7:30). And bedtime with a 2.75 we ended at 7:15. He slept around 8:15 and I read that it could be because that’s when his internal biological clock was used to a 8:30 bedtime and that’s why he fought it.

What do we do on days like this where he wakes up earlier? I started to feel like we had things figured out and today felt like a set back. I’ve been feeling so guilty for not figuring this out sooner. It’s been trial and error but it’s been so stressful. This is all so brand new to me.

LO hates bedtime routine

Our 4.5 month old started hating his bedtime routine. We do feed, bath, pjs, book, sleep sack and sound machine. He used to cry during the book portion of his routine and he’s now recently cried when starting his bath :(

He’s also crying when I bring him up just to change his diaper.

Is there anything I can do about to help him not have such a negative association to his room? I’ve tried reading his book in a different environment and it helped for one day and then he cried again.

He’s had a rough journey with sleep training (scheduling issues) and I’m worried he hates his room and sleep.

2 weeks in and still 1hr bedtime cries.

Our LO is 4.5 months and since sleep training, we’ve had maybe 2-3 nights of no tears. We have tried tweaking the schedule and nothing seems to work. More sleep, less sleep, more awake time, less awake time. We’ve done the same bedtime routine since 2 months old. Feed, bath, pjs, sleep sack, sound machine. Since sleeping training, we’ve added a book after pjs. The WWs we are at now are: 1.75/2/2.15/2.25. We always wake him up for the morning at 7:30am.

He just very recently dropped that 4th nap because naps are getting longer. He naps anywhere between 3-3.5 hours (mostly 3).

We tried long WWs and he crashes anywhere even if you play with him he will open and close his eyes so we dialled it back and went to WWs that he still had a hard time staying awake with but we can distract him and keep him awake long enough for.

He almost always cries for up to an hour and I don’t know what to do. He sleeps the night for the most part and does not fight his naps, he sleeps almost instantly or with very little whining maybe 5 mins tops.

I thought bedtime was supposed to be easier??

Please give me your advise what can we do? Please no harsh responses, I’m looking for genuine advice as this has been a very stressful 2 weeks.

My son is

My son is 4 months old. WWs are 1.5/1.75/1.75/1.75/1.75 and bedtime routine is bottle after last nap, play, bath, pjs, nurse as a top up, books, sleep sack and sound machine.

We are on night 5 and day 4 of sleep training. Someone sits on a chair near his crib and comforts him every 2 minutes of crying until he falls asleep. For naps, we do check ins. If he is hysterical we check in every 15 minutes. If he whines or fusses we don’t but when he is really protesting we start the timer.

Night 1: Protested for 20 minutes
Night 2: No protesting just some whines every now and then and took 30 minutes to sleep
Night 3: Whined for 20 minutes and then protested for an hour before sleeping
Night 4: Cried for 20 minutes
Night 5: Protested for 20 minutes, 15 minutes of and on and off crying and started to self soothe by cooing

Night 3 was really bad, we were on WWs that were 15 minutes less than what we’re doing now. He also went down much later than usual which didn’t help. Once increased WWs, naps got a bit easier (we are also nap training).

I’m just wondering if the nights seem fine or if he should be crying less by now?
