Genuinely what do I do as a cyclist

Small rant.

I live in a small city with a lot of people. So there are a lot of cars, and very few roads. And even fewer sidewalks. To the point, there are long stretches of grass before there is ever a sidewalk again.

I personally do not like riding my bike in the road, but genuinely what else do I do when my only other choice is ride in the grass, or ride on the sidewalk until there's no more sidewalk, switch back to the road (because there is no sidewalk for miles), and go back to the sidewalk when it’s there again.

I keep to the shoulder and ride 20mph. I ride an ebike. I signal, I look. But I get so many people who hate me. I’ve been cycling for only a week now. And literally today while I’m standing on the sidewalk fixing my GPS, some car beeps and flicks me off 😭 (Edit, the sidewalk was connected to a driveway. I was going to fix my GPS, and turn into the road using the driveway)
