What can the city do to make non-car commuters safer? (brainstorming thread)

With all the vehicular incidents and deaths that have occured since February, what can the city do to protect residents that may not be using cars? I'm talking people crossing the street, people commuting using a skateboard or bike, or the city-wide pilot programs for the e-scooters.

Asking this because it seems like with every hit-and-run case, we don't see the city comment on what they're doing to make things safer for people that aren't in a car, but instead just give their condolences and keep things going as usual.

Yes, homicides are down but the fact you're more likely to be hit by a car driving recklessly and get away with it than being a victim of a violent crime is a bad message for people coming to the city who may not use a car to commute.

So, what can the city implement or change or add about the current pedestrian infrastructure to protect residents? (protected bike lanes, moving crossing lines away from the curb for better pedestrian visibility, creating more parking spaces to prevent double parking, etc)

"You got bike lanes? Yeah we got bike lanes"

But they're slowly losing their color and blending in with the street

MAYOR RAS J. BARAKA STATEMENT ON TRAGIC DEATH OF 17-YEAR-OLD PEDESTRIAN ON BLOOMFIELD AVENUE

"This past Sunday evening, August 9, a 17 year old pedestrian was tragically struck and killed on Bloomfield Avenue.

"This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and I extend my deepest condolences to the victim's family and loved ones. No family should ever have to endure such a horrific loss, and our entire community mourns with them during this incredibly difficult time.

"The suspect in connection with this incident has turned himself in to authorities and is currently in custody. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, and we must allow that investigation to proceed and establish all of the facts.

"I also want to address misinformation that has been circulating on social media, including claims that this tragedy occurred as a result of Newark police pursuing a stolen vehicle. That information is false. The vehicle was not stolen. The City of Newark also has a strict policy prohibiting vehicle pursuits except under limited circumstances involving serious offenses.

"It is reckless and deeply concerning for anyone to present speculation as fact when the circumstances remain under investigation. At a time when a family is grieving the devastating loss of a daughter whose young life was tragically cut short, we must be responsible with the information we share and ensure that it is accurate and verified. Spreading misinformation does nothing to help this grieving family or our community. It only compounds the pain and causes harım during an already devastating time.

"We will continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation. Above all, our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with the family and all those mourning this heartbreaking loss."

Sinkhole has gotten worse at branch + photo of fallen tree

Best guess is this sinkhole is only going to get worse until it caves or the county does something about it

More damage at the park & update on fallen tree by barringer

Hard to tell if this was a result of the peoole who handle the park looking for something, or if this was caused by the flooding we had during the tornado watch, as this wasn't in its current state post-thunderstorm. The fallen tree higher up by barringer that was knocked down during the thunderstorm is still down after a county sheriff stopped by and put up caution tape a few days ago, although the tree has started to begin decomposing.

Is the offical city page using AI for their event posters now?

Has anyone else noticed the city using AI-generated imagery for event posters lately? It started earlier this year and seems to be happening way more often now.

For standard events like heat or code blue advisories, they usually just reuse old templates and swap out the dates, which makes sense. But for these big annual events or updates, they’re suddenly using AI infographics. It’s frustrating because last year they had great, human-made posters that just needed quick date and location updates.

Newark is full of incredibly talented artists and designers, so it feels cheap for the city to cut corners using ai to potentially cut out graphic designers and social media managers. It's especially ironic given AI's farmful impact on the enviornment and the city's cemented identity. If we could comtinue paying our graphic designer to create posters for the city, that'd be good too.

Ollie Help (OP knows how to ollie)

As you can see in the video, I ride a goofy stance on my board - I can pop the tail, I can raise the nose, and it's alot less rocketed than my previous ollies.

My only issue and where I'm stumped is how to bring the tail higher to level out my board? I know I mainly have to get out of the way of the board to raise the tail and nose, but it seems that even while I'm out of the way, the board can't level out. I also struggle to bring my right (front) foot in to my left knee and raise it, any pointers? Surely theres got to be some metaphor that might help me understand this better

Another issue you can see is my balance, which largely has to do with the back bushings unfortunately being broken (bought a prebuilt off amazon)

Is this also a good enough ollie to clear most curbs?

Delaney Hall Protestors not from Newark?

I keep seeing comments trying to deflect from the mistreatment of the detainees and the brutality imparted on protestors at Delaney Hall by focusing entirely on where the protesters are from, and why should it matter? Traveling across city, county, or state lines to protest a human rights crisis shouldn't make the protestors "paid agitators" or some kind of bad guys. It paints the picture that outsiders care more about the severe medical neglect and hunger strikes inside a facility in our city than the people living here do.

While we do have organizations and individuals from Newark protesting at Delaney Hall, creatiing a narrative that nobody actually from the city cares about what is going on there is a bad picture for Newark and a testament to how indifferent our residents are to suffering.

Is Jhamar Youngblood a "Newark Native"?

This is not a post with the intent to offend anyone that is not native to the city but lives learns or works within Newark.

I however do want to draw attention to the fact that Jhamar Youngblood who has run on being a native newarker, spoken on the behalf of natives in the city, and tried to exclude residents of our city - Was in fact born two cities away in Orange, New Jersey in 1988. with his hometown reportedly being another 2 cities away in Elizabeth, New Jersey dating from 2006-2011.

There is nothing acknowledging Jhamar Youngblood as a newark native besides word of mouth from himself, The City of Newark's Facebook Post about his blastchat app in 2017 and a Dartmouth College Alumni Biography in 2019.

Issues at Branch Brook

While branch has some of the best views of the Cathedral and atmosphere the infrastructure (and lack thereof) diminishes some of that atmosphere.

  1. Sidewalk abruptly cuts off past the restrooms and turns into a dirt/gravel path, becomes next to impossible to walk along after rainfall just under the bridge

  2. Parts of trees have seemingly fallen off and obstructed some steps of the park

3, 4 and 6 exhibit the same issues as 1, where as 3 completely loses any path and becomes a dirt road, terrible after rainfall.

  1. Parts of the sidwalk near the lake have been split apart with pvc piping visible, definite tripping hazard.

Thankfully most of the week has had dry conditions but after rainfall the deeper more neglected parts of the park become more difficult to navigate. The thought going through my head most is why the county hasnt properly done work for these pathways? We know they're working on an improved building by the basketball courts on Clinton ave. is there a preservation act stopping the county from paving any new or exsisting roads in the park?

Likely making a part two for the upper areas of branch in the next few day's

Learning an ollie, any pointers?

You can see at first I try to figure out how to pop the board with my weaker leg, as I ride goofy style, I'm doing pretty good at raising my foot to lift the nose but I'm struggling at getting my left foot to raise up after I jump and lift the nose.

Or, I just struggle to either keep my back foot on the board which I fixed after this recording by sending my back foot down and then back when I try to jump and lift the nose,

I also struggle to raise my body up to high, which might have to do with holding onto the table parallel to my shoulders?

Pointers appreciated!
