[NSV / Progress] Down 18 lbs in ~4 months, what actually changed for me

Hey everyone,

I’ve been lurking here for a while and finally wanted to share my progress because I’ve gotten a lot of motivation from this community.

I started at 198 lbs in early February and this morning I weighed in at 180 lbs. I’m 5’6” for context. The scale has been moving slowly and unevenly, but overall it’s trending down in a way that finally feels sustainable.

What I changed (and kept pretty simple):

I didn’t do anything extreme. I focused on consistency rather than perfection. I started tracking my food most days using a basic calorie app, not obsessively but enough to understand my patterns. I realized my portions were a lot bigger than I thought, especially snacks and takeout meals.

I didn’t cut out foods I enjoy. Instead, I just built meals around more protein, vegetables, and fiber so I stayed full longer. Breakfast became something I actually eat regularly now instead of skipping and then overeating later in the day.

Movement-wise, I started walking more intentionally. I aim for 7–10k steps most days, even if it’s broken up into smaller walks. I also added light strength training 2–3 times a week at home using dumbbells and bodyweight exercises. Nothing intense, just enough to feel stronger and more capable.

What surprised me the most:

  • My cravings are way more manageable now
  • I don’t feel as “snacky” at night as I used to
  • My energy during the day is noticeably better
  • Clothes fitting differently has been more motivating than the scale sometimes

One non-scale win I didn’t expect: I can walk up multiple flights of stairs without feeling like I need a break immediately after. That alone feels huge for me.

What still challenges me:

Weekends are still the hardest. I tend to relax my routine and sometimes overeat without realizing it until later. I’m still working on finding a balance where I can enjoy social meals without feeling like I “reset” my progress every Monday.

Also, progress isn’t perfectly linear. Some weeks I don’t lose anything, and once I even went up a pound or two, but it always eventually corrects itself if I stay consistent.

If I had to sum it up, the biggest change wasn’t a specific diet, it was building habits I can actually maintain without feeling like I’m punishing myself.

I’m still early in the journey, but for the first time, I don’t feel like I’m “starting over” every few weeks.
