Big Ole Nail
Hiya! Kind of a boring find, but I was wondering if anyone could help me ID this spike I found on a little island in Argyll UK d:
Some Info:
- found this under the rocks on a shingle beach about 30 steps away from the ruins of a medieval castle (area vacated 1700).
- square shank 1cm thick, off centre to head
- around 7-8 inches at full length
- wrought iron (I think)
- flat, roughly elliptical head with no visible hammer marks
my guess is that it was hand forged… A little confused with how a nail old enough to be hand forged could have been submerged in salt water for so long without more rust/corrosion though. Anyone find something similar? Know what this would have been used for? Approximate dates?
