Service Mission Questions

Hey everyone, I had a question about service missions and wanted to see if anyone has experience with this.

I’m 19 and I can’t serve a regular proselyting mission because of my cancer history and ongoing medical stuff. I still really want to serve, so I’ve been looking into a service mission.

My brother has autism and needs someone with him pretty consistently. He really struggles with having random caregivers and does a lot better with people he already trusts. I’ve been thinking about whether part of my service could involve helping care for him.

The caregiving would likely be through a state approved caregiver program, so I’d technically be getting paid for helping him. Part of the reason I’m asking is because my family doesn’t really have money for mission related expenses, including service mission costs, so I would need to work while serving.

I’ve heard there can sometimes be exceptions or flexibility with working during a service mission depending on the situation, so I was wondering if anyone here has seen something like this approved before.

My goal isn’t to avoid missionary work. I genuinely want to serve while also helping support my family and my brother in a way that’s sustainable.

Has anyone seen situations like this work before with service missionaries? Were mission leaders flexible with schedules, jobs, caregiving, or disability related situations?

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences.
