Correct mechanics of Oi-tsuki in Shotokan?
I’ve been training Shotokan consistently over the past fourteen months. One technique which often gives me trouble is the Oi-tsuki or lunge punch. It seems different practitioners have different ways of executing this fundamental technique.
From Zenkutsu-dachi; our Sensei tells us to slide the back leg to the front, bringing both of them together, squeeze the legs tight, next stepping down into Zenkutsu-dachi again but with the lead leg, timing the punch as you land (see https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PDONkxaZk7A )
Some however even skip bringing both feet and leg’s together! Instead just stepping right into the punch. See ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3GbhbcEMIwg at 1:35 seconds onwards). One of the senior black belts at our club teaches it such in this context.
Which way is technically correct in Shotokan? I’m aware different styles stances depth and width of stances will vary, this is in regards to Shotokan.
