Is USB-C actually making things simpler, or just more confusing?

When USB-C was first introduced, it was said, "One cable to rule them all." But has it actually made things simpler?

USB-C fixes a lot of issues. It’s reversible and widely adopted across phones, laptops, and accessories.

But not all USB-C ports are the same. Some support fast charging; some don’t. Some can output video; others can’t. Then there’s Thunderbolt, USB 3.2, USB4. It gets confusing fast. And the cables are also different. Two USB-C cables can look identical but support different features.

I’m curious: has USB-C simplified your setup or just made things more confusing?

Why is my brand new USB 3.0 so slow?

I just got a new USB 3.0 flash drive and thought it would be faster than my old one. It's mainly for moving some game mods and project files between my desktop and laptop.

But the transfer speed is so slow. It said it was gonna take over an hour for something that’s only a few GB. I already double-checked that I used a USB 3.0 port. And I tried both front and back ports on my PC, same issue.

What’s the worst USB mistake you’ve ever made?

I once formatted the wrong USB drive while cleaning up files. I thought I had picked an empty one. But after formatting, I realized (a second too late) it was the one with important documents on it.

And once I pulled out a USB drive without ejecting it because I was in a hurry. Then the USB drive stopped working.

Have you ever made a USB mistake that cost you data or time? I see people run into all kinds of USB issues here pretty often. Thought it might be helpful to share experiences and help others avoid the same mistakes.

How to check if a usb drive is fake?

I got a USB 3.0 flash drive from a client. The listed capacity is large, but the actual usable capacity on my computer is much smaller. I tested the read and write speeds. The results are very inconsistent. Sometimes it's fast, but sometimes it drops a lot. Could this be a fake drive? Any good way to check it?

Why does every USB-C cable seem to support something different?

I used to think USB-C was the end of cable chaos. But I now have a drawer of USB-C cables.

Some charge my laptop at full speed. Others take four hours to get my phone from 60% to 65%.

Some cables only support charging, while others support data transfer.

Some USB C cables even say only for one specific item.

I know different cables are for different needs. But for me, it's frustrating to have many USB-C cables that look identical but have different functions.

USB not showing up

My USB drive just suddenly stopped showing up on my pc. When I plug it in, I do hear the connection sound, but it doesn’t appear in file explorer. I also checked Disk Management, no device. I’m not sure whether this is a driver problem, a partition issue, or the USB itself failing.

Don't yank USB-C cable out of the wall by the cord

I destroyed a USB‑C cable. I know it's better to grasp the cable by the hard connector, but I sometimes just yank on the cable without thinking. Now it started getting loose.

If you want your USB-C cable to last, don’t pull on the cord itself. Pull by the plug and remove it that way. The constant stress on the cable near the plug is wearing it out faster than the rest of the cable.

USB 2.0 is still on new PC, phone, USB hub?

I found a USB 2.0 port on a new office PC. Has anyone else noticed USB 2.0 making a comeback? Especially, I saw this year's iPhone air and 17 support USB 2.0 too.

Is it to cut cable costs? Someone mentioned that USB 2.0 needs fewer traces on the motherboard. It uses smaller ports, and its hips are smaller too. Costs drop a lot.

Edit: USB 2 is still used. I'm just trying to say that it's still popular, or even more so than before.

How to format a write protected usb flash drive using diskpart

When I tried to format a USB drive, it said it was write-protected. I see others have also run into this issue before. Here's how I formatted the write-protected USB flash drive using diskpart. It worked for me (Kingston DataTraveler 3.0 128GB, no physical lock switch).

The video is a bit long, so I sped it up. Hope it's helpful.
