Only change that doesn’t make sense

I actually like/appreciate most of the changes they made from the books, especially after I listened to Levy’s interviews. The thought process makes a lot of sense in the current generation + context of the show.

One change I cannot forgive, however, is the reason for Hannah’s request for help from Garrett.

The book makes it very clear that this is only about Hannah’s own trauma and her trust and comfort in Garrett, which is why she asks him. The book also makes it explicitly clear that it’s NOT for her future dates with Justin /anyone else- it’s something Garret calls her out on when he’s trying to confess his feelings for her (“fluffer”).

In the show, she clearly says it’s to get her ready for her dates with Justin. I think it cheapens the whole request, and takes away from the essence of Garrett and Hannah’s friendship. And for all the reasons they had to deviate from the books, this change doesn’t make any sense to me, and I can’t think of anything that justifies it. It shines a bigger light on the Hannah-using-Garrett part rather than their friendship+ vulnerability part.
