is it worth it to become a commercial pilot as a degree holder
context: jc grad, have offer for biz degree from big 3, currently in ns
flying is a career I have dreamed of as a child but shelved it away due to how ppl said it was v difficult and required alot of hours of being away from home.
during bmt, there was a recruitment talk about being a pilot along with its benefits (which I got to admit, was very attractive). decided to declare interest, then got sent to do aeromedical screening and some iq test. I guess I passed as I was sent to a special programme where they conduct more medical tests. recently, I found out I failed one of the med test and was kinda bummed out. it felt like my dreams got shattered all over again.
was talking to my friend about this, and he suggested SQ. however i have concerns about becoming a commercial pilot, due to its volatility and slow career progression, low starting salary.
on the other hand, if I don’t become a pilot, I am aiming to enter the high finance industry. when retired, I’ll prolly go Australia to do a PPL.
for me, I feel like salary is quite a big deal as I do not wish to burden my parents? we’re comfortable but I do not wish to always rely on them. I hope for them to have enjoy retirement without worrying about finances at all.
here’s the question, is it worth it to become a commercial pilot as a degree holder? (considering salary, unemployment during events like covid), or is it better to just grind in finance and purse my PPL later on.
