Any folks gave up career or have parents/in-laws care for kids?

Genuine question as a close relative who is on a verge of giving up her career to care for kids as her kids are taking PSLE soon (P4 & P5) & she wouldn’t want her children to do badly in their exams as her children might not have a good career in the future if their studies are affected given current uncertainties in the world, things might get worse in future. Trying to think of some good advice to give her besides giving up her career.

Have y’all been in similar situation where either your parent/grandparent cared for you as a kid while you were growing up with your other parent worked or yourself/spouse/parents/in-laws currently planning/stepping in/have stepped in previously to care for your kids? How are you preparing if going to do so/How did it turn out for yourself previously as a kid/for your kid as personally had no one care for me growing up other then being provided with basic meals hence interested to know.

Evergreen at 28

So as the title suggests, im 28F and still evergreen. Never been asked out by any guys before, never been on a date, never even held hands with anyone before. I'm pretty introverted so i know it's my own problem for not putting myself out there and mingling more. But I can't help but feel there's something wrong with me and it's embarrassing when dating topics come up because I have no experience. As i grow older, it just seems like I'm just deemed to be single forever. Is there anyone in the same boat or anyone with similar experience and managed to find love?

anyone know where to get formal/office looking elastic band pants (no zipper or buttons)

i am looking for elastic band long pants that can pass off as working pants.

i got some from japan some time back but they are getting old.

the thing i cant even find the term i am looking for. "elastic long pants" refer to mostly exercise pants that dont look formal looking, "working elastic pants" usually refer to those zipper + 1 button kind.

i am looking for fully elastic band only pants that looks like work pants.

What other help besides psychiatric in-patient or Good Samaritans hotline if you are suicidal?

Currently suicidal. I really don't want to traumatise my neighbours by splatting onto the pavement. It is not fair to them.

I am on psychiatric meds. I am in therapy. Despite that, I am currently feeling very suicidal. I can't call the Good Samaritans hotline because I literally don't know how to put my feelings into words to say to them and I know that they are a stopgap measure to stop you from immediately attempting so that you can get long-term help (but I have been getting long-term help, meds and therapy, for a decade and I am still in a deep, dark hole).

I know from previous hospital stay (not psychiatric) and testimonies from here about IMH and other in-patient to know that it will DEFINITELY not help me and make things worse.

Is there literally any other option? When I Google all the results just say to call someone.

Paiseh for the downer thread and thanks for the advice.

Debit card fraud

Hello guys, I misplaced my debit card and didn’t realise until a few weeks after. I cancelled my card as soon as I realised, and saw that several transactions had been made from my card (local transactions like ez link top up) amounting to around 100 dollars. I did make a police report as well. This happened MONTHS ago, still no update from the police. Can I expect anything from SPF? Or do they just not investigate if the amount spent is relatively low?

Anyone notice a lot of corporate young guys nowadays who unbutton their dress shirt?

If you walk around Raffles Place area you can find quite a few guys with like almost half their dress shirt unbuttoned. Why do they do this for? Is it to assert their big energy alpha male dominance or something?

I even saw one guy with like at least 3 buttons unbuttoned and nearly his full chest popping up. And before you say SG too hot, come on, he was sitting in an air conditioned restaurant

Hiring a helper to care for baby.

Hi fellow parents of Reddit,

I gave birth to my baby girl in June, and as first-time parents, my husband and I are still learning how to care for a newborn. Even though we tried to learn as much as possible from our confinement nanny before she left, there are still times when we struggle to soothe our baby despite feeding her, changing her diaper, and trying all the usual comforting methods.

Both my husband and I work full-time and will eventually have to return to the work. After much discussion, we decided to hire a helper instead of sending our baby to infant care because our jobs require us to be well-rested and focused. Sleep deprivation from night caregiving isn’t really an option, especially for my husband, who rides a motorcycle to work and needs to stay alert for his own safety.

We hired an experienced helper whose main responsibility is to care for our baby, including night duties. During the interview, we were very clear about the job scope, and she was comfortable with it. She has raised her own children in Indonesia and is very confident in caring for babies.

So far, we counted ourselves lucky as our helper has been wonderful with our daughter. She is patient, experienced, and genuinely seems to know what she’s doing. Even so, I can’t help feeling anxious.

My biggest concerns are:

  1. Trust and safety. No matter how capable she is, she’s still someone we didn’t know before, and I sometimes worry about my baby’s safety when baby is alone with the helper at home
  2. Bonding. Since I’ll be at work most of the day and only get to spend time with my baby in the evenings, I’m worried that she’ll become more attached to our helper than to me. I know it may sound irrational, but the thought of my daughter seeing the helper as her primary caregiver—or even calling her “mama” one day—really breaks my heart.

I’d really appreciate hearing from parents who have been in a similar situation. How did you cope with these worries? What did you do to ensure your baby’s safety while building trust with your helper? And how did you deal with the guilt of not being the one caring for your baby most of the time?

Really appreciate and thank you in advance for sharing your experiences.

P.S. My husband and I don’t have a village of family or relatives to lean on for help. Since we both need to continue working and can’t afford to lose either source of income, hiring a helper was the only practical option for us.

Health

I want to quit smoking again and could use some advice from people who've successfully done it.

A few years ago, I managed to quit cold turkey for 3 days, but I eventually gave in due to social influence and a lack of discipline on my part. I've been thinking of trying nicotine patches this time instead of relying on willpower alone.

Has anyone here successfully quit smoking using nicotine patches? What was your experience like? Did they help with cravings, and how long did it take before things got easier?

To be honest, I'm not feeling very confident about quitting, but I really want to stop. Lately I've been experiencing chest tightness, lower energy levels, and it's becoming harder to ignore the impact smoking is having on my health.

Any advice, success stories, or even hard truths would be appreciated.

I kept thinking of what my life could have been like

I remember the year that i apply for uni, i still had some stuff that i haven’t complete on my to-do list like learn driving and i wanted to do it first but idk why did i go ahead to apply for uni.

Looking back, i could have stayed at my first job longer while completing my to-do list and after i finish my to-do list then i apply for Uni and decide if i want full time or part time degree and which course i want. Then i can either continue working and take the part time degree or just study full time and quit my job. Then after graduating i continue working again. I can also do a career switch if idw this industry anymore

If not i could have apply for uni and make sure i don’t screw things up and either study full time or study part time and continue working. Then i can continue with my to-do list and after graduating, i can either remain in this industry or switch to other career

But i messed up and got pressured to resign. I went from working full time to studying part time and totally not working while completing my to-do list. Then now i am just studying part time and totally not working. The worst thing is last year was quite a good year because i finally get to go japan with my family and i joined a concert band and managed to perform on stage. The only sad thing is i am only taking a part time degree while experiencing those things. Would have been better if i had a full time degree/full time job. I kept thinking of what it could have been instead. I have a social worker and i didn’t even tell them that i had a bad gut feeling when i was applying for Uni last time and even when things are already screwed up idk why i keep telling them that i feel frustrated that i don’t get to go to uni when the real reason was because idw the part time degree. I wish i just told them the real reason instead. I also regret accepting this part time degree. Should have look for other full time job instead after getting pressured and not accept the part time degree or just find a full time job while studying part time.

Where Can I Watch Soccer Without Paying for Multiple Subscriptions?

Hi everyone,

I'm a big soccer fan, but paying for multiple streaming services is getting too expensive. I'm looking for affordable or free ways to watch live matches online with decent quality.

What are you using these days? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! ⚽

What happens when a group of 20-30 people do not seat in assigned seats in aircraft on boarding?

Hi all, recently i was on a flight to bali from changi airport with a budget airline. During boarding, there was a group of eastern european people probably from russia or balkans (language incomprehensive) who were angry that they had to seat separately with their spouses / family.

Most of them were above 50s with white hair. But there were a lot of singaporeans, indonesians and other tourists who were unable to seat at their allocated seats. The tour leader was unable to speak good english and explain the situation to the cabin crew. Cabin crew were pissed. 2 or 3 light blue uniformed officers were called onboard. The flight was almost delayed and then they just told everyone to seat down in empty seats and the flight took off 10 minutes later than scheduled.

I am happy that the flight took off and landed without big delays or bad events. So after landing, i managed to talk to the tour leader, being colleagues from different countries, she explained that they paid for seating but non of the guests were given the seats paid for and everyone had to seat away from spouses / family.

My question is, what happens if such a big group does this again and how will changi airport or the ground staff / cabin crew face this situation? Call for police back up? Deboard the plane? Cancel the flight?

How often do you go for a haircut?

Just wondering since I do it quite often, once per month and it’s not “cheap” either, $12.

Could yall comment down how often and the price so that I can get a rough overview? Thanks!
