What should I do in 3rd year to build a strong research career in biotechnology?

Im a Btech Biotechnology student from a tier 2 college and I’ve just completed my 2nd year. Recently I have been thinking a lot about my future especially abt going into research but honestly I feel pretty confused about what direction I should take... rn im working on college projects related to biomaterials and bioinformatics and I genuinely enjoy both areas. The problem is that I can’t figure out what I should focus on moving forward or how to build a strong profile for research and higher studies. I do want to apply abroad for masters in future with scholarships but is it even the right choice or if I should continue in India itself for higher studies and research. I don’t really know what path would be better in the long run. im entering my 3rd year now I want to use this time properly instead of randomly doing courses and internships without direction. What should I actually focus on during these next two years if I want to build a career in research?

  • What skills matter the most?
  • How do you apply for scholarships abroad and what does it take to actually get selected?
  • What kind of internships/projects should I aim for?
  • What should someone from a non-iit/nit do to stand out?

Im also very confused between pursuing biomaterials research and bioinformatics. I find both interesting but idk which field has better opportunities, funding, growth and scope internationally. I just dont want to spend the next few years doing random things and later realize none of it actually helped me move forward.
