ADHD: How easy is it to continue treatment as an expat?

Hi everyone! I was wondering if there are any adults with ADHD in this community who could share their experience of getting treatment in the Netherlands. How easy is it to access medication, how often do you need to see a doctor, and can a GP handle prescription renewals? I already have an ADHD diagnosis from my home country and have been stable on medication for the past two years, so if I move, being able to continue treatment will be a pretty important factor for me.

I’d especially love to hear about finding a GP who is understanding of ADHD, how prescription renewals work, medication costs, and whether ADHD medication is reimbursed by health insurance or if you generally have to pay part or all of it yourself. Any personal experiences or advice would be really appreciated. Thank you! 😊

Fellow ADHDers in the Netherlands, I have a few questions!

Hey everyone! 👋

First of all, apologies for posting in English. I don’t speak Dutch (yet 😅). I may be moving to the Netherlands soon for work, and before accepting the offer I wanted to get a better idea of how ADHD is generally viewed and treated there.

Where I currently live, there’s unfortunately still quite a lot of stigma around mental health, so you can imagine that ADHD in adults isn’t always the easiest thing to navigate.

I was diagnosed with ADHD in my home country, not where I currently live, and I’ve been stable on medication for the past two years. I was previously on Concerta 54 mg and then switched to Elvanse 50 mg.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a few questions:

• Are medications like Concerta and Elvanse generally covered or reimbursed by Dutch health insurers for adults with an ADHD diagnosis? Or would I have to pay for them completely out of pocket? If so, roughly how much does it cost per month?

• How does getting repeat prescriptions work in the Netherlands? Here, I have to see a GP every 28 days to get my monthly prescription renewed. And with the current shortage of GPs, good luck getting an appointment 😅. The whole process can be quite a headache.

Is it similar in the Netherlands, or is it possible to get prescriptions for longer periods and have a more straightforward renewal process?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have experience with adult ADHD treatment in the Netherlands, especially if you’re taking Elvanse or Concerta.

Thanks so much everyone, and cheers!

Moving to Belgium with ADHD: how does medication work here?

Hi everyone!

I’m moving to Belgium soon and I’m looking for some advice/information about ADHD medication for adults.

I currently take Concerta 54mg, and I’ve also previously been on Elvanse 50mg. I was wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how much these medications cost in Belgium, and whether they are usually reimbursed (at least partially) through a mutuelle.

I have an ADHD diagnosis from my home country, as well as my previous prescriptions and medical records, in case that helps with getting treatment here.

Any advice or personal experience would be really appreciated! 😊 Thank you!
