"STOP CODE: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x7E). What failed: raspppoe.sys"
Hello,
I recently downloaded a security update on Windows:
2026-05 Security Update (KB5089549) (26200.8457)
Upon restarting my computer, I was met with the following error:
"STOP CODE: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x7E). What failed: raspppoe.sys"
I had to hold down the power button to get out of this screen, restart my computer, where it then seemed to reinstall the update then power down. I turned my computer back on to no apparent issues.
I'd like to understand what this means, and how to prevent issues like this in future. Could this lead to ongoing issues? Is this a sign of a deeper problem I could worsen by ignoring?

I'm relatively new to PC gaming and I'd like to prevent unknowingly damaging hardware due to ignorance.
