Project Ars Arcanum: Spore Invention Crafting System

Hello, everyone!

I've finished up a rough draft of the Spore Invention Crafting system, currently complete with 5 Standard Inventions and 6 Unique Inventions. The system is very similar to the Fabrial Crafting System, with the exception of the Aether Spores: each type of spore has a unique effect on its own, and they are also used in the crafting process of Spore Inventions (in place of the Gemstone required by Fabrials) and are used to recharge them (in place of the Stormlight required by Fabrials).

Now that the rough draft is complete for this system, I can finally actually finish the Sprouter Speciality. Sorry that this has taken so long.

Also, after I finish with the Sprouter Speciality, I might not be able to make posts for a while: I start university classes the second week of September, meaning that I'm going to be busy packing / moving for the next few weeks.

Anyway, as always, please let me know any thoughts, ideas, and feedback you have. It is always appreciated. (also still looking for Spore Invention Ideas, if you have any).

Project Ars Arcanum: Tress' Sporegun and Unique Spore Invention Help

Hello everyone!

So, small update this time. I have typed up the bulk of the rules for the Spore Invention Crafting system, which mirrors the Fabrial crafting system. Right now, I am working on making Unique Invention Effects, as well as Advanced Invention Features (mirrored after their Fabrial counterparts).

I figured that the first effect I created should be one that we actually see in Tress of the Emerald Sea, so I made statistics for Tress' modified flaregun (which i've "very creatively" named the Sporegun). The Spore Pouches Required section relates to the crafting system: instead of a Gemstone, each Spore Invention requires certain amounts of Spore Pouches of different types in order to craft, with the general rule of thumb being 15 Spore Pouches per Tier.

However, I need help now: in my previous post, I asked for Spore Invention ideas. So far, I've only gotten 1, and that was from my little brother (he recommended the Vinewhip: an Invention strapped to your arm that shoots out a Verdant vine to strike and ensnare a target and can later reel the vine back in order to drag the target to you). I still need more ideas for Spore Invention effects, both Standard and Unique. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Aside from the Sporegun and Vinewhip, here's the ideas I've created myself so far:

Essence Enhancer: a small device (similar to a Splintbox) that can be imbedded into a Midnight Essence, allowing them to unleash a specific Spore Pouch effect as a special action,

Flameflinger: a device that uses Zephyr to fire a pressurized stream of water, which comes into contact with a small amount of Sunlight, essentially creating a flamethrower,

Gustpack: a harness with a tank of water connected to several aluminum tubes going out at different angles, each containing a concentration of Zephyr, which allows the wearer to fling themselves through the air a short distance in a direction of their choice and cushion the impact of a fall,

Spikesuit: a silver-inlaid vest full of small holes covered in 2 thin layers of Roseite (separating water and Crimson spores) that shatter when impacted, releasing Crimson spikes to retaliate against an aggressor, which are then quickly disintegrated by the silver inlay so as not to inhibit movement.

Project Ars Arcanum: Standard Spore Inventions Update

Hello, everyone.

After trying to continue working on the Sprouter speciality, I figured out that I was coming at the design process from the wrong direction: instead of making the speciality followed by the crafting system, I should make the crafting system first. So, that's what I've started doing.

So far, I've tweaked the description at the beginning of the Aether Spores section to more easily codify stacked spore effects (thank you Kividual66). Additionally, I've made the basic rules associated with using Spore Inventions, as well as a list of 5 Standard Inventions (similar to standard fabrials). While the system is similar to the fabrials, I did introduce a unique take on item charges, since these Inventions aren't fueled by Stormlight but instead by the Aether Spores.

As always, please let me know any thoughts and feedback you have. They are greatly appreciated.

P.S. While the Stormlight Archive showcases a lot of different Fabrials over the course of the novels, I only have one book to pull Spore Inventions from. If any of you guys have ideas for special inventions that could be made using different combinations of Aether Spores, I'd love to hear them. Especially some involving Crimson and Midnight, since we don't really see inventions using those.

P.P.S. I'm now on the Cosmere RPG and Plotweaver Discord, and I have linked Project Ars Arcanum on both. I'll still probably post most of my updates here, but would still like to hear feedback (especially any playtesting experience) you have over there.

Project Ars Arcanum: Base Aether Spore Rules

Hello everyone.

So, I made a post a few hours ago about an issue with the Project Ars Arcanum doc. I ended up resolving the issue, but I still have no idea how it happened in the first place.

Anyway, I decided to post a mini update on the progress of the Sprouter. Since this is going to take a while, I figured I'd post mini updates about my progress just so it doesn't seem like I've gone dark. Included is the rough draft for the basic effects of the different Aether Spores from Lumar. The Sprouter Speciality and Spore Invention system will eventually incorporate these Spores in a similar capacity to how the Artifabrian and Fabrial system use gemstones.

For now, please let me know your thoughts, opinions, and feedback on these. It is always wanted and appreciated.

Project Ars Arcanum: Um . . . Help?

So, I was in the middle of typing up the talents for the Sprouter speciality. When I tried convert it to a double column format, it did this. How do I fix this? (If you can't tell what's wrong, try reading the talent)

Project Ars Arcanum: Poll Results & Special Character Sheet

Hello everyone!

After looking at the comments on my last post, it looks like I'll be making the Sprouter (Scholar Speciality) next. Don't worry: Forger is next in line.

As far as Sprouter goes, the path is probably going to be quite similar to the Artifabrian, and the Spore Invention Crafting system is probably going to be similar to Fabrial Crafting. The major change is going to be the introduction of the Aether Spores: each of the 6 types we know of (Verdant, Sunlight, Zephyr, Crimson, Roseite, and Midnight) are going to have a base effect associated with them (probably like a simplified Surge/Metallic Arts effect), and each Invention will have a special Spore Cost, in place of a Tiered Gemstone, where certain amounts of different spores are required for crafting.

This is probably going to take a while, due to the crafting system. I'll work on this while I can, but I probably won't have the rough draft for at least 2 weeks. Sorry.

In the meantime, here's a small extra to make character creation easier for Project Ars Arcanum paths. I modified the Radiant Sheet (pg 3) of the official Cosmere Character Sheet to be able to incorporate the Invested Paths and Nahel Companions of the project. Please let me know any thoughts and feedback you have.

Project Ars Arcanum: What Path Should I Make Next? (Forger vs Sprouter)

Hello, everyone!

The time has come to tackle the final 4 Paths of Project Ars Arcanum, which I have been saving for last due to their complexity: the Awakener (Invested Path), Elantrian (Invested Path), Forger (Scholar Speciality), and Sprouter (Scholar Speciality).

I've decided to start with the Forger and the Sprouter, which will be modeled after the Artifabrian. Each will have its own crafting system, based on the Fabrial crafting system in the Stormlight Handbook (Soulstamps and Spore Inventions, respectively).

With that being said, I figured I'd leave the next step up to you guys: which should I make first? Like the Nightmare Painter vs. Sand Master poll, whichever path receives the most amount of comments in favor will be made first. (Sorry this isn't a proper poll post: for some reason, it doesn't work in browser).

Project Ars Arcanum: Seon Bond Path Complete!

Hello, everyone!

This is probably the shortest tree in the entirety of Project Ars Arcanum, with a whopping 5 talents. While that doesn't seem like much, it is essentially the same as the Aviar path: 3 of the 7 talents of that path are locked behind one of the 3 types of Aviar, bringing the max amount of talents to 5 per Aviar. These short trees are intentional so that they don't significantly detract from advancing in Heroic and Invested Paths.

I did tweak the Seon stat block slightly, following a short conversation with BudgetFresh7656: now, with the Living Investiture feature, the balancing mechanical restriction on a Seon's abilities makes more sense from a lore perspective.

As always, please let me know any questions, thoughts, feedback, etc. that you have. It is always wanted and appreciated.

Project Ars Arcanum: Seon Update

Hello, everyone! As the title suggests, I've been working on the Seon (Nahel Companion) as the next path for Project Ars Arcanum. While I haven't started on the Seon Bond tree yet, I have finished the rough draft for both the Seon statblock and the Seon Abilities.

The Seon statblock is definitely interesting, in that they are almost impossible to kill, but also unable to inflict damage. It is very unusual definitely breaks a lot of game-balance conventions, but then again, they were never meant to have much use in combat, so I think it's ok.

As far as the Seon Abilities go, they definitely provide massive benefits, such as the ability to send messages through any other Seon in the Cosmere, as well as the ability to repeat anything said within 20 feet of a Seon. However, similar to the Sand Master, I ended up compensating for this by giving the Abilities high Focus and Action costs, as well as steadily depleting the Seon's Investiture while the Abilities are active.

While I haven't started the Seon Bond path yet, it is probably going to function pretty similarly to the Aviar Bond path, so it hopefully shouldn't take me that long.

As always, please let me know your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback on this: they are greatly appreciated.

Project Ars Arcanum: Aviar Bond Path Complete!

I ended up finishing this much sooner than expected. This was definitely a fun path-type to create: mechanically, it ended up borrowing some elements from the Tracker Speciality (which, honestly, just screams Sixth of the Dusk) and Spren Bond trees. However, this is still probably the most I've deviated from official Paths, in that this is a unique Path type separate from Ancestral, Heroic, and Invested.

As always, please let me know any of your thoughts and feedback on this. It is always appreciated and it really helps me to tackle this massive project.

P.S. With the Rough Draft of the Aviar complete, I have officially completed half of the paths for Project Ars Arcanum! Granted, the other half of the paths are going to be a bit more difficult to make, but I still felt like this was a milestone worth celebrating. Thank you all for your help, support, and encouragement thus far. I seriously wouldn't have done this if it wasn't for you.

Project Ars Arcanum: Aviar Stat Block

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Things have been hectic, and I haven't had much time to work on Project Ars Arcanum.

As a small update, I wanted to share my progress on the Companions, which I've decided to rename as "Nahel Companions" to avoid confusion. What I've ended up boiling it down to is that, mechanically, the Aviar and Seon will function similarly to Spren: when you form a bond with one, you will immediately gain access to a small benefit, Nahel Companion Abilities (mirrored after Spren Abilities), and access to a unique Nahel Bond tree (mirrored after the Spren Bond trees). Unlike Spren, however, you won't gain an Investiture score from your bond, and the Nahel Bond trees will probably be shorter than the Spren ones.

I decided to start with Aviar first. However, since Aviar are Physical creatures, I decided to give them a proper stat block in addition to all the afore-mentioned Nahel Companion rules. The rough draft of the Aviar stat block is included here, and is visible in the Project Ars Arcanum main doc. Its intended that, as you progress through the Aviar Bond tree, the Aviar will become stronger will you. Please let me know what you think so far.

Project Ars Arcanum: Sand Master Invested Path Complete!

Hello, everyone! I just finished the Sand Master Invested Path!

Storms, did this take longer than I thought it would. My schedule suddenly got much more crowded than I expected, so I wasn't able to work quite as fast as I had with the other paths. Additionally, what I thought was just going to be a 9 talent path (like Navigator) ended up spiraling out into a 16 talent path split into 3 kinda-seperate mini-trees. I guess that's just the creative process.

As far as what I'll tackle next, I'm probably going to end up doing the Aviar and Seon companions. They'll probably function like a weird miss-mash of the Larkin and Spren in terms pf how they interact with player characters. My output is probably going to slow way down due to the aforementioned schedule crowding, but I'll still work on this when I get the chance.

But, anyway, please let me know what you think of the Sand Master. I appreciate any feedback.

Project Ars Arcanum: Nightmare Painter (Hunter Speciality) Complete!

Hey, everyone! On my last post, I got a majority of votes for the Nightmare Painter path, so that's what I made. please let me know what you think! Also, fear not those of you who wanted Sand Master, because that's what I'm going to tackle next.

Also, as a side note, you may have noticed that the color scheme is different for this path. I've decided that each path will have its own unique color palette to make it easier to differentiate on the doc. The Nightmare Painter's colors are Cyan and Magenta to reflect the hion.

Project Ars Arcanum: Which Path Should I Make Next?

So, as you guys probably already know, I just finished the rough drafts of the Arcanist and Navigator paths for Project Ars Arcanum (a.k.a. The Big Fan-Content Expansion).

As I sat down to decide which path to make next, I ended up narrowing it down to the Nightmare Painter (Hunter Speciality) and the Sand Master (Invested Path). After thinking about it, I decided to leave the decision up to you guys: which should I do next, the Nightmare Painter or the Sand Master?

Please note: due to the extra layer of complexity for the other paths (Soulstamp carving, Aether spore stats/inventions, Awakener commands, Aon construction, etc.), I've decided to tackle them later after I've gained more experience from the others. Sorry if that's a little disappointing, I just want to make sure I do it right.

[Emberdark Spoilers] Navigator Invested Path Complete!

Hey, everyone! Just finished tackling my first Invested Path for Project Ars Arcanum, the Navigator! Included are images of the complete path, rules for Luminist, and advice for creating Navigator characters.

Also, I figured that now that 2 of the paths are complete, I could release a condensed early access to Project Ars Arcanum with both of them!

[Emberdark Spoilers] Project Ars Arcanum: Started working on Navigator Invested Path

Heads Up: Isles of the Emberdark Spoilers Ahead (RAFO and all that).

Hey everyone! Just wanted to let you guys know that I've started working on the Navigator Invested Path. I figured that it would probably be the simplest of the Invested Paths, so it would be a great jumping off point before the more intimidating Elantrian or Awakener.

Included in the image are the rules for Luminist, as well as the Luminist Base Actions (based on the Stormlight Base Actions). Some liberties were taken due to lack of information from the novel, so not everything might be 100% cannon.

Please let me know what you guys think!

Plans for a Big Fan Content Expansion

So, I'm a D&D Homebrew content creator and had the idea to make a big, free fan content expansion for the Cosmere RPG that contains a bunch of different Invested paths for player characters to take (such as Awakener, Elantrian, and Sand Master) before the official books come out.

After sitting down, laying it all out, and starting to work on the first path (Arcanist scholar speciality), I realized that this would be a much bigger undertaking than I originally thought. Now, I am still willing to make it, but only if there's actually interest in it. Would you guys like this Fan Expansion, or am I wasting my time?

The Images are of a WIP table of contents.

Edit: Holy crap, did this post get a lot of attention. So many of you were so positive and supportive, that I've decided to continue with making the expansion, which I've decided to name Project Ars Arcanum. Now, I can't make any promises about how long this will take me: it's still a huge undertaking. But, I'll work on it when I can, and I'll post updates about my progress.

Speaking of which, I completed the rough draft for the Arcanist! Please let me know what you think. Your advice and suggestions are deeply appreciated.

I intended to make the update a seperate post, but reddit took it down. I think it was too close to rule #7 for r/cosmererpg.

Edit #2: In case you guys missed it, I made a new post about me starting work on the Navigator Invested path. So far, I have written up the rules for Luminist.
