Phone mount recommendation for 3-day desert rally/enduro race?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations for a very reliable phone mount for a dirt bike.
I’ll be riding the Desafío del Desierto, a 3-day rally/enduro-style event with around 700 km of desert terrain, including fast sections, sand, vibration, and a high chance of drops/crashes.
The phone is critical for the event because the organization uses GPS tracking to record my time, and it will also be used for navigation. So losing the phone or having the mount fail would be a serious problem, not just an inconvenience.
The mount needs to survive:
- 3 full days of off-road abuse
- High-speed desert riding
- Heavy vibration
- Sand and dust
- Possible crashes or tip-overs
- A large phone used for GPS tracking and navigation
I’m not looking for a cheap casual mount. I need something that is proven for serious off-road use.
I’ve looked at options like Quad Lock, RAM Mounts, SP Connect, Peak Design, etc., but I’d like to hear real-world experiences from people who have used them in rally, enduro, desert racing, or long off-road trips.
Main questions:
- Which mount would you trust for this kind of race?
- Is vibration damping necessary?
- Are there any mounts that tend to fail off-road?
- Would you recommend mounting it on the handlebar, crossbar, or somewhere else?
- Any tips to prevent losing the phone in a crash?
- Would you use an extra safety tether/lanyard?
Bike is a Honda CRF450X.
Thanks in advance.
