Community College Transfer Results
Hi everyone! I’d like to share a little about my transfer cycle:
Accepted:
- Amherst College — committed (full ride)
- Georgetown University
- Columbia GS
Rejected:
- Princeton
- Yale
- Williams
I received my Amherst acceptance early, so I withdrew my applications from Northwestern, Swarthmore, and Haverford because Amherst was my top choice.
I’m a non-traditional transfer student (26), an immigrant, and I’m transferring from a community college. I’ll be starting at Amherst as a sophomore. I had a 4.0 GPA, did not submit SAT scores, and submitted four strong letters of recommendation.
At my community college, I served as SGA Vice President and Student Ambassador while also working full-time as a server. I participated in several fellowships and worked as a research assistant through a partnership between my community college and the University of Chicago. I was also heavily involved in Model UN and traveled to three national conferences, where I received awards.
I was a Jack Kent Cooke semifinalist, a Point Foundation Community College Scholar, and recently received the Point Foundation Flagship Scholarship.
My application was very focused on advocacy and my work supporting immigrant communities in Chicago. I had opportunities to meet with the Governor and the Mayor and advocate nationally for organizations that support immigrants in higher education.
Before moving to the U.S., I lived in Uganda for six months during an internship. I’m a low-income, first-generation student, and I think those experiences were an important part of my story. I moved to the U.S. alone and had to navigate everything on my own, which was definitely not easy.
I’m really grateful that the process is finally over, and I wish everyone applying next year the best of luck.
My biggest advice: be intentional. Take classes related to your interests/major, build meaningful relationships with your professors, and connect early with the transfer advisors at your school.
