I was doing some thinking and I don't have much evidence to bring to the table, however it seems the closest i can find to an explanation.

Looking at the dragon head that is Regidrago's arm you can see the shape and texture look very similar to Charizard's head. Given that its possible for Charizard to Gigantamax We've seen a new form of charizard so far 4 if were not counting clone. thanks to Eternitus and an episode in the actual anime showing ancient Gengar and Alakazam fighting (they were just bigger versions of themselves) this also may hint some kind of an Ancient Charizard.

Pokémon go finally changed the way mega evolution works for X & Y Charizard. Looks like they duplicated what mega energy you previously had, i have to progress my best charizard through mega because this is my first 3 star shiny GMax Charizard
