I (almost) won Extra Grand Battle with Purple Kaido

To be forthright, it was a weird situation where there were a lot of no-shows, so we fired with only 16 people. So it was only 4 rounds. For what it's worth though, out of my 4 opponents, I know 3 are very good at the game, so the matches felt legit and competitive.

  • R1: UY Nami - (🎲❌) 1st - 👍
  • R2: OP13 Sabo - (🎲✅) 2nd - 👍
  • R3: Y Kid - (🎲✅) 2nd - 👍
  • R4: Imu - (🎲✅) 2nd - 👎

Also, the decklist photo is old and I'm too lazy to take a new one. I've swapped out 2 X-Drake and 2 Uso-Hachi for 4 Nola, just because it's another 2k that provides protection for King against removal in blue matchups, particularly RU Ace's Jozu.

The deck is pretty straightforward, but as always, even with unga bunga decks, so reps will give you interesting insights and there are some clever plays that aren't necessarily obvious.

In a vacuum, you want to go first, but against decks that really want second, you can typically afford to take second throw them off their curve.

Starting hand you wanna see one of the following combinations:

  • Searcher + Oni/Queen
  • Searcher + King
  • Oni/Queen + King

The deck is bricky, and I've had days where I just don't see these pieces on time, but overall, I almost always do get these pieces on time. (In my R3, I actually kept a starting hand of 3 events because it had 2 Queens, and since I was going second, I trusted that drawing 5 would get me to my King in time, and it did.)

Standard curve is:

  • Turn 1: Search/Queen
  • Turn 2: Ramp with Oni/Queen, swing Leader with available Don
  • Turn 3: Swing Leader, play King, double ramp, play Searcher/Queen/Nola (if you expect non-KO removal)
  • Turn 4: begin freestyling

On Turn 4 you will be at 10 Don regardless of turn order, and by far one of the sexiest plays the deck has is to:

  • drop 7c Kaido,
  • rest the opponent's blocker
  • if they are at 6 in hand, swing 9k rush into their life, they will take, going up to 7 in hand
  • Activate King, ramp 1 active and 1 rested
  • Spend your 4 Don on Law, ripping 2 from opponent's hand

So you effectively have access to an 11 Don play where you take a establish a 7/9 Rush and a 4/5 Blocker, while taking one of their lives and ripping two from their hand. And that's before you've even swung with Leader or King. It's gas.

Then nuke your opponent's board with Bomb Kaido or drop back to back Rush Kaidos to close out the game, obviously using Leader ability to burn their last life after playing a Rush Kaido on a lethal turn.

Your Rad Beam event is also fire because it can also tap a blocker of any cost and give your leader a modest but important power buff, and it spends exactly 7 Don, which you can then follow up with a Leader lifeburn.

Black Maria is rarely used, but some matchups you just wanna starve and burn you can certainly use her. Or if you need an emergency way to both burn and get back up to high Don the turn after dropping a Nuke Kaido.

Imu is actually a very favored matchup, so I was very bummed I lost my serial to it - but I just saw too few resting cards and he saw too many blockers, but it is what it is.

Just thought I'd share. Is a very, very fun deck and I'll relish any chance to play it. Hoping for more EGB's in the future
