IRS Sent to Collections because of mistake, now they can't help me
Don't know where else to turn so figured I'd ask if anyone else has an idea. My company switched payroll providers mid 2023 so we got two separate W-2's. As such when I did my taxes I had to submit both, only one of them was accepted by the IRS, mostly due to an error either on my company or ADP (still up for debate.) Regardless because of this the IRS said I owed a balance of $11k when in fact they owed me closer to $3k.. Even after providing the right paperwork any everything it still took almost two years for them to actually remedy the situation on their side.
In that time they withheld and kept my 2024 Federal return of $2k and on top of that sent my balance due to collections. After meeting with the IRS again, they said they put a note in the system to make sure the error is noticed but someone in collections and that it would take 60days. So far its been three months and still nothing, they say I have to wait until its assigned to someone. Taxpayer Advocacy said they can't do anything to help me and no one seems to know how to get in touch with this collection agency.
If anyone has and advice or similar stories I'd love to hear it, thanks.
