Making heavy/complex mesh objects more lightweight?

Sorry for the confusing title. Here's the situation:

I'm using Display Modes for a drawing project. I have a primary display mode set for the viewport, but the objects within the scene need to have another display mode. These objects are generally imported Sketchup files that are converted to meshes. They usually import as nested block references, and the only way I can get the proper display mode to carry through to the geometry is to explode them, but when I do this they start to really slow down the software. Is there any way to deal with these in a better way?

External HD has become RAW -- how to recover?

I have an old LaCie P9227 external hard disk. It was formatted exFAT. On Windows I would usually have to open Disk Management and assign it a drive letter before I could access it. It was working as of a month ago.

Upon plugging it in yesterday it wasn't being recognized in Disk Management but there was a little setup wizard that appeared...I clicked through it, I probably shouldn't have. I think it was the New Simple Volume Wizard. Ultimately it did not fix my issue, and as it stands my HD is now classified as RAW, so chkdsk does not work, Recuva will not deal with it, and Testdisk stalls at 99% when I analyze.

Can someone please help me with next recovery steps? Thank you!

Cross-border bank account or just get a US account?

I'm a Canadian and I'll be living in the US for 4 years starting this fall. I'll be making about $50,000 USD per year. I have an RBC account already and could sign up for their cross-border banking, but I can also just sign up for Chase or Bank of America. Are there any benefits/downsides to either option? Thanks.

Moving household belongings/furniture

I'm a Canadian and I will be moving on a J visa to establish residency in the US for 4 years. I will be bringing a U-Haul with my furniture (bed, table, couch, kitchenware etc). As I understand if this is newer than 1 year old I will need to pay duty. I don't have receipts for any of it, however, so my question is: how much is this sort of thing scrutinized?

Any *true* Canada/US plans available in Canada?

I'm a Canadian and will be in the US for school starting in September. Most Canada/US/Mexico plans indicate that you must spend most of your time in Canada. For example, the small legal print on Fizz says: "you must not use this service primarily on a Fizz partner service provider mobile network." Are there any plans that would allow me true freedom to move between countries without worrying about these clauses and how much time I'm spending in any one place? Thanks!

Best cross-border phone plans?

I will need to be spending 8 months of the year in the US and am hoping to get a plan that allows me to keep my Canadian phone number and go between the US and Canada. I know Rogers has one, but if anyone has experience with any others I'd love to hear.

HUH Holden Green - any thoughts?

My spouse and I got a 1 bedroom in a townhouse in this community. Anyone know anything about it? There were no interior photos so we're taking a bit of a chance. But the price was reasonable ($2556), it's cat-friendly, and avoiding the fuss of the private market seems really nice. Also we don't drive and it's in walking distance of the T, Market Basket, Whole Foods, etc. If you have horror stories maybe don't tell me since I'm already committed 😅

Best options for cross-border banking?

I'm a Canadian and will be attending a PhD program in the USA in the fall, for which I'll receive a $50,000 USD stipend yearly. What are my best options for dealing with this? I currently bank with RBC and I'm open to going to them, but also happy to explore better/cheaper options if they are out there. I've heard that some American banks will open accounts for international students but how does that work if I don't have a SIN? Also...what is Wise? Any tips appreciated!

International student leasing?

I'm a Canadian and will be moving to Boston soon. Am I going to have a hard time with landlords/brokers? E.g. will a Canadian bank account funds or even Canadian guarantor be OK for renting? Anything else to be aware of?

I'm an incoming GSAS PhD student and the first two years of the program are coursework. Am I able to access things like the child benefit $ if I'm just a PhD student (and not a TA yet, for example)?

Thanks
