Deciding which of the following textbooks to use for compiler construction

Hello there, I'm starting a compiler construction unit for my university semester and I'm trying to decide which textbook would work best as a guide for the subject. I know this has been asked quite a lot over the years, but I'd like to know if there are other books I haven't considered yet as well or more up to date opinions on the books.

So far the top recommended books from previous threads (such as these threads: thread 1, thread 2, thread 3) I've come across are:

  • Engineering a Compiler by Keith Cooper and Linda Torczon
  • Crafting a Compiler With C by Fischer
  • Dragon Book

I am planning to build a compiler by the end of the unit, where each chapter has a small implementation lab task provided my lecturer (such as making a CFG parser for example), and I'm heavily leaning to making one in C targeting the 6502 (rather than x86).

I'm also aware that the Dragon Book is considered old and outdated, despite being the foundation of other books and compiler designers. I've seen some books like Introduction to Compilers and Language Design which use existing parsers (I think YACC, I've also seen references to FLEX and Bison), however I'd like to build everything from scratch to learn more.

Which other books would also be good? I know some people tend to read multiple books together to fill in the gaps for certain chapters, however I'm looking to order one physical copy of a book as it's easier to concentrate and make notes from.

Is SoulSeek down? Can't login due to socket error

Hello there, I've been using SS for a few months now and recently I've been having trouble logging in. When starting up the client, it attempts to connect to the server but fails with a sockets error. After searching online, I've tried changing the server port but that didn't work, and I've also tried changing the username for logging in bit with no luck.

When I search online for the official website (https://www.slsknet.org) it doesn't go through, which makes me believe it's down. Is anyone facing this issue? If it's any help, I using the AppImage version of SoulSeek released in 2024-6-30 (which is quite old as Windows seems to have a newer version, but this is from the official site)

Finally got my first DAP! I’ve been wanting one for so long and finally ordered the Hiby R1, and I love it! I spent a week while waiting for the shipment ripping CDs and downloading my music library, and listening to high quality uncompressed music is amazing compared to streaming it.

It feels completely different having so much control over my library, rather than just adding new songs constantly which I may not go back to, a DAP makes me be very intentional in what songs and albums I want to listen to and download and those I won’t bother with.

I really like the simplicity of the Hiby R1, it’s straightforward to setup, Bluetooth works quite well and the audio playback is brilliant, especially with the Soundfield toggle which if I’m correct works similar to Dolby Atoms. The UI is a bit slow, but that’s probably since I’m using a slow SD card which I’ll upgrade soon, but playback is smooth.

Now I just need to get a set of wired earphones for university as headphones are a bit too big. Any recommendations or specs to keep in mind?
