Mitsu-Bishi 590 No.2

These recently arrived from Japan along with some other vintage Japanese pencils. I had been looking for a pack of 12 of these for some time. Didn’t think I’d end up with a full half grosser!

Since I have so many I think it should be ok if I sharpen one or two ☺️.

Joseph Dixon Crucible Company Traveler 313 Medium Soft Pencil

Recently found these JDCC Traveler 313 pencils in medium soft. I’m not sure what year these are from but I’m certain they’re the oldest Dixon’s in my collection Currently. I love these older long style ferrules. They almost look like they are some kind of nickel type metal. Overall quite a special pencil. I’d love to find some catalogue references for this pencil if anyone can point me in the right direction? Thank you!

I made a “Golwing” lol

Hackwings seem to be quite popular with some people, though I could go either way, not crazy about them but don’t see anything wrong with them on the right pencil. But I recently did the opposite and converted a blackwing into what I guess I’m going to call a Golwing, hahahha. Has anyone else done this? I can’t be the first I know someone else has to have done it before as well, 😅.

I also made a little short showing it

Eagle Comfort 602

Here’s a really beautiful looking pencil, imo at least. The Eagle Comfort 602. I just love the blue color with the thick foil stampings. The blue reminds me of the blue on my 1970s JBL L100 Century speakers with the blue foam covers. Also having a ferrule that’s not perf crimped is always nice to look at. Kind of funny that they share the same number as another nice pencil. Anyone know when this model was first introduced? I have another sleeve of an earlier set in storage. It has the Eagle style sleeve from the 20s/30s. Would be funny if these used the 602 before EF🤣. I think I may sharpen one soon as I generally love 2.5 graphite.

WW2 style Cardboard Ferrule Musgrave Monona 817 No.3

Here’s a cool set of vintage Musgrave Monona 817 No.3 pencils. I think of all the cardboard ferruled pencils in my collection these look the nicest. They’re still so glossy and shiny they almost look plastic at first glance. I’d love to find a 13th pencil so I can sharpen one, but it seems these Monona’s are getting harder to find especially ones with the cardboard ferrule.

These Kumon Children Pencils are Quite Nice

I recently came across these KumonShuppan “Children Pencil” pencils and ended up getting one of each model. They come in a short 6B, a medium 4B, and a large 2B size and each one is intended for different age demographic. They have a really comfortable diameter reuleaux shaped barrel with a very smooth natural finish. Even though my typical graphite core preference is on the harder side I ended up really liking the 2B version. Quite a comfortable pencil to write with. I reviewed them on my YouTube channel(PencilsPastandPresent) if anyone is interested. Has anyone else tried them? I’d love to hear your thoughts on them.

Does Kita-Boshi make their own block eraser?

Hi there, I really love Kita-Boshi pencils and was thinking it would be cool to have a block eraser (or any eraser really) that was branded from them. I’ve not been able to find one though so they just now make them?

Thanks!

Eberhard Faber Commerce 395 No.2

Here’s another round pencil that is an exception to my general dislike of round pencils. The Eberhard Faber Commerce 395 in No. 2. I do wish they had a box but a nice condition sleeve is the next best thing I suppose.

Dedicated “HackWing” Eraser

I recently found some old Venus Type-E-Rase pencil erasers with the brush ferrule. Since the rubber eraser core is long since age hardened they’re essentially useless except for the little brush on the end. So I thought it might be cool to convert one to a dedicated eraser using a repurposed ACE ferrule. Though I don’t know if this is an original idea or not, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone show one, so I thought I’d share it with everyone here. If anything it maybe a good way to get some use out of the myriad of vintage pencil eraser brush guys that are no longer usable since the eraser has age hardened. I’ve already made a video on how I make hackwings so maybe this might make a good subject for a short.

Finally got the roundies! EF Mongol 480 no.3

Despite round pencils not being my first choice I’ve been wanting to add the round variant of EF Mongols to my collection for some time but have not come across them in my hunting. So imagine my surprise when my father gifted me this set of 11 in the original box for my birthday recently! He had no idea I was even looking for some round ones he just saw a box of old pencils at an antique shop in the glass case and thought I might like them. I was quite excited to open up the gift to see a vintage box of mongols. Then doubly surprised when I pushed them open and saw that they were round!
