How to effortlessly master the Gérondif Irregulars (A quick trick for anyone struggling!)

Bonjour everyone!

I know a lot of people get tripped up when studying the gérondif, especially when trying to memorize which verbs go irregular. It used to drive me crazy until I realized a massive shortcut that makes it click instantly.

The secret? The gérondif uses the exact same irregular roots as the Imparfait. Think about it: to form the gérondif, you take the nous form of the present tense, drop the -ons, and add -ant (preceded by "en").

Because of this, the only three verbs that are truly irregular in the gérondif are the exact same three that don't match the standard nous rule in the imparfait. If you can remember Être, Avoir, and Savoir, you’ve mastered them all.

Here is the easy mental cheat sheet:

  • Être (root: ét-) ➔ En étant (While being)
  • Avoir (root: ay-) ➔ En ayant (While having)
  • Savoir (root: sach-) ➔ En sachant (While knowing)

That’s it. Just three! Even notoriously annoying verbs like faire (en faisant) and aller (en allant) follow the completely standard rule based on their nous forms (nous faisons, nous allons).

I actually put together a full, clean visual guide breaking down the standard sentence structures, common traps, and a few practice examples over on my site if you want a quick bookmark to study from: [ https://www.prepmyfrench.com/grammar/verbs/gerondif ]

Hope this saves some of you a headache on your next grammar drill or TEF/TCF prep! What other grammar rules are driving you guys nuts right now?
