Finished my PhD not too long ago and just found out that my unofficial supervisor scooped my thesis topic and published an article with another scholar. The core research question is identical. Same topic, same case, just using separate data and a slightly different methodology. Does something like this happen often? I am struck and feel betrayed as I trusted this person with my whole heart. Technically it doesn't seem to cross the legal line into plagiarism, but any words of advice or thoughts from you would be appreciated.
