UTS or USYD - Masters in Engineering- Mechanical Engineering ( specialization in industrial automation and robotics)

I’m an international student who is currently deciding between UTS and the University of Sydney for my Master’s in Mechanical Engineering focused on robotics and automation, and I’d really appreciate honest advice from current students or graduates.

Initially, I was leaning towards UTS because I liked its practical and industry-focused teaching style. However, while checking the course handbook and speaking to some students, I heard that the robotics specialization and some related subjects may gradually be discontinued or reduced from 2027 onwards. Robotics and automation is my main career interest, so this made me worried about the long-term stability of the course.

On the other hand, the tuition fees at university of sydney is significantly higher. I know USYD has a much stronger global reputation, but I’ve also heard it’s more theoretical and research-focused compared to UTS.

My goal is to build a career in automation/robotics engineering, preferably in industries like manufacturing.

I’d really appreciate honest opinions on:

Current situation of engineering and robotics at UTS

Whether robotics specialization is actually being reduced/discontinued

Practical exposure and employability at both universities

Whether USYD’s higher reputation is worth the significantly higher tuition

Which university would better suit someone interested in applied robotics and automation rather than pure research

Would really appreciate any insights.

Thanks a lot guys!!
