Stayed at a hotel in Milan – my friend recorded something creepy at 4-5am every night. Help us figure out what this is.

Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit for this, still figuring out where this fits best. If anyone has a better suggestion, please let me know.

So this just happened and I need the internet's help.

I was staying at a hotel in Milan with a group of friends. One of my friends had his own room, and for two nights in a row, he woke up between 4 and 5am hearing a voice, what sounded like an Italian man speaking. He described it as sounding like a recording, not a live person, a short phrase, said once, then silence. Nothing before, nothing after.

The first night, the voice was so loud, so clear, so clean that he actually got up and checked behind the curtains to see if someone was there. Nothing.

We thought it was weird but brushed it off after the first night. After the second night, we were convinced something strange was going on.

So on the third night, we asked him to sleep with his phone recording audio the whole night.

He heard it again at roughly the same time, and this time, instead of a voice, it was music. Short, maybe 10 seconds. Starts, ends. Completely isolated. But here's the thing: if you listen carefully to the recording before the music kicks in, there are what sound like 4 distinct thumps or steps. Footsteps? We genuinely don't know. After the music ends, nothing. Total silence.

What we know:

  • It happened between 4–5am, consistently across multiple nights
  • The sound came from the area of the room where the TV and desk were, but the TV was never turned on, not once
  • It sounded like it was coming from a speaker, clear, not muffled
  • The intensity was strong enough to wake him up and comes through clearly on the recording

This is not a pasta. This actually happened.

Obviously it doesn't have to be supernatural, we're actually more curious about the rational explanation. Our best theories so far:

  • A neighbour's alarm clock bleeding through poorly insulated walls? (But the volume seems too loud for that, and... is "creepy music" anyone's alarm?)
  • Some kind of hotel system or automated broadcast glitching at a specific time?
  • Something hidden in the room?

The audio is attached. If anyone recognises the music, that alone would help us narrow this down massively.

What do you think?
