My friend disappeared during a night hike and I still don’t know what happened to him
This happened a few years ago, and I’ve never really told the whole story online because I know how ridiculous it’s going to sound Me and three friends decided to go hiking one night because we were bored and wanted to do something different. It wasn’t some crazy wilderness trip either. It was a trail we’d all been on during the day before, and there was a parking area pretty close to the trailhead.
We started hiking around 10:30 at night It was actually pretty peaceful at first The weather was cool, there wasn’t much wind, and we could see the moon through the trees. We had flashlights, water, and our phones, so none of us were really worried.
About an hour into the hike, we started hearing something in the woods.
At first we thought it was an animal. You know that feeling when you hear a branch snap somewhere and immediately convince yourself it’s nothing? That’s basically what we did. Every few minutes we’d hear something moving off the trail, but whenever we stopped to listen, everything went completely quiet.
One of my friends, Ryan started getting uncomfortable. He kept looking behind us and asking if we’d heard someone walking. We told him it was probably a deer or something.
Then he stopped talking.
We eventually realized he wasn’t with us anymore.
We figured he’d just stopped to tie his shoe or something, so we walked back down the trail calling his name. No answer. We kept going back until we reached a point where we could see pretty far down the trail in both directions.
He wasn’t there.
We called his phone. We could hear it ringing somewhere in the woods, but we couldn’t see him.
That’s when things got weird.
The ringing stopped, and a few seconds later we heard Ryan’s voice from somewhere off the trail.
He said, “Guys, I’m over here.”
We followed the voice maybe twenty or thirty feet into the woods.
Then we heard it again.
“Guys?”
It sounded exactly like him.
But Ryan’s phone was still ringing back on the trail.
We just stood there staring at each other.
Nobody wanted to go any farther.
Then the phone stopped ringing.
We called his name again, and this time there was no answer.
We ended up calling the police and search crews came out that night. They searched the area for hours. They found Ryan’s backpack sitting beside the trail, but they never found him.
It’s been years.
The part that still bothers me is that we heard his voice twice from inside the woods, even though his phone was sitting on the trail with us.
I don’t know what we heard that night.
I don’t know if it was actually Ryan or something that sounded like him.
I just know that if I ever hear someone calling my name from the woods at night again, I’m not answering
