Enlisting Army Active Duty With History of Childhood Autoimmune Disease (Juvenile Dermatomyositis)

When I was 8 years old I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called juvenile dermatomyositis. I was doing treatment for several years and stopped taking medications around 3 1/2 years ago. I am now 18 and have been completely discharged from my rheumatologists care for over 2 years.

The disease is known to attack the muscles but I really didn't have any muscular issues which is shown through my labs and an MRI. The only issue I've really had from it was a rash. Right now I have been completely off of medications for 3 1/2 years with zero issues or flare ups at all. I weight lift 6 times a week and have been extremely active.

I started talking to an army recruiter around 2 months ago and he seems fairly confident I could get a waiver approved for it but I don't really know. In a couple of days I am seeing my rheumatologist to get a clearance letter and I will go to meps shortly afterwards.

Has anyone seen resolved childhood autoimmune conditions get waivered before? I am just kind of wondering if it's even worth my time. I'm willing to wait and do the extensive paperwork and has always been my dream to join.

Is it gyno? Fat? Or do I just have body dysmorphia and it doesn't look as bad as I think? 18 years old

I have lost a lot of weight. I used to weight 220 and my moobs were significantly bigger. Lifting for about 4 months making good progress and trying to cut down a little bit more. Currently weight 160

Joining Army Active Duty with History of Juvenile Dermatomyositis

Ever since I was little I have always been interested in joining the military and recently started talking with a recruiter.

When I was 8 I was diagnosed with a really rare autoimmune disease known as juvenile dermatomyositis. When I got the disease it was relatively mild and I just had a facial rash and no muscular inflammation shown on blood labs or MRI. (Disease is known to attack muscles and skin).

Around 4 years ago I entered remission and haven't had to take any medications or do any follow up visits with my specialist since. I pretty much just live a normal life now and forgot all about it until I started trying to enlist.

I disclosed this to my recruiter and he said that I need to get a clearance letter from my specialist which I am working on and she is okay with doing that. I know recruiters tend to lie about stuff but when I was in the office I was speaking to another recruiter about my medical history and they both seemed to think that a waiver is definitely possible if I provide all my medical records and a clearance letter.

I should by going to meps in late July or early August. I am willing to do the extensive paperwork and waiting but I kind of just wanna know if this is even worth my time? Has anybody known other people who have got waivers approved for resolved childhood autoimmune conditions?
