What do you think of Queen Gorgo’s storyline in 300?
Queen Gorgo’s storyline in 300 was not based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel. In the graphic novel, she only appeared in the farewell scene and said the “come back with your shield or on it” line. Her scenes in the movie showed how much she loved Sparta and her husband. The sacrifice she made and betrayal she suffered mirrored what Leonidas encountered at Thermopylae.
However, if you think about why Leonidas marched to Thermopylae, it seems unnecessary to have a storyline about Gorgo. Leonidas only took 300 because he knew it would be suicidal and his death would get the council to start the war with Persia. Even if Gorgo did not do what she did in an attempt to help Leonidas, Sparta would still likely send more men (just like what happened at the end of the movie) to avenge their king.
I have seen some people say that they are not fond of Gorgo’s storyline in 300 because it did not add much to the movie in terms of storytelling. I don’t mind seeing what happened to Gorgo while Leonidas was fighting for Sparta but do understand why some people don’t like it. What do y’all think?
