Severe breakage - what's the solution?
Hello, I'll try to break down my routine as much as possible. I have thick, wavy hair. Apparently discussing breakage or hair loss of any kind isn't allowed on r/Wavyhair for some reason, so I'm bringing this hear.
- Shampoo every other day. I usually aim to condition every other shampoo day but sometimes do it every shampoo.
- Airdry. No styling products applied at any point. Heat never used although I suppose the water I use is fairly but not unusually hot.
- I used to use a loreal clarifying and volumizing shampoo, then random hydrating conditioners; last one i used was a garnier fructis. Because of the breakage I switched to a Dove volume/fullness damage therapy shampoo and a bond therapy conditioner maybe almost two weeks ago but I haven't seen improvement
- I dyed my hair black many months ago, then about a month or two ago I redid the dye. As it's black, no bleach involved
The breakage almost exclusively happens as I'm applying conditioner. With shampoo it's fairly easy to be gentle so there's minimal or none, but no matter how gentle I am with the conditioner my hands get covered in tons of little short hairs (I have shoulder-length layered hair). In response I've begun to hesitate to condition at all.
My girlfriend thinks that the dye may have been the culprit. I'm hesitant because the first time I applied it there was zero issue, and then this damage only came some time after I redyed, but perhaps my hair is just hitting a breaking point.
I don't ever find loose hairs on my pillows or anything like that. When my hair's perfectly dry my girlfriend is able to play with it without breakage. It seems to almost be exclusively when I go to condition; perhaps the water makes my hair really fragile?
Let me know what to fix and I'll do it right away.
