Considering a Move: Chicago vs Tampa/St. Pete — Can you offer insight on Russian Orthodox Communities + Life in These Cities?

Hi everyone,

I’m in my early 30s,single and seriously considering relocating within the next year. I currently live in Asheville, NC, and while I’ve appreciated my time here, I’m feeling ready for a bigger chapter socially, spiritually, and professionally. I work in the nonprofit/philanthropic sector and am looking for a city that offers a balance of community, beauty, walkability, and a stronger sense of opportunity and connection.

Right now my top contenders are:

Chicago area

and

Tampa / St. Pete

One thing that’s become increasingly important to me is finding a strong Russian Orthodox community. I’d love to hear from anyone in these cities about:

  • What the parish culture is like
  • Whether the communities feel welcoming to newcomers/converts
  • If the parish is large, active, family-oriented, younger, etc.
  • Whether the community feels engaged and social or more quiet/insular
  • How often people gather outside of liturgy
  • If there are opportunities to genuinely build friendships/community

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who:

  • moved to a city partly for church/community reasons,
  • came from smaller towns,
  • or found meaningful friendships/community through Orthodoxy.

I know every parish is different, but I’d really appreciate honest perspectives and personal experiences.

Thank you!
