After 1000 hours the Tundra biome surprised me

After over 1000 hours playing Rimworld which were mostly spent in temperate forests, grasslands, deserts or the new island atolls, my first run in the tundra biome surprised me…

I play Naked Brutality exclusively as I like to build up from scratch and in this run I followed my usual formula.

>Set up my first small wooden base

>Create an 8x8 rice field

>Recruit 1-2 more pawns

>Grow my food stores

Wait…what do you mean it‘s so cold here you can only grow crops for 20-25 out of 60 days in the year? What do you mean temperatures drop to -10 at night in spring and autumn and -30 in winter?

Needless to say my food stores didn’t last long and very quickly my freezing pawns had to make some increasingly difficult decisions:

>Wear tainted raider clothing to protect from cold…okay no problem

>Our tamed arctic wolf is eating our meagre meat rations…sorry Ice but we need the food and the meat you can give us

>There are no animals around…okay we need to eat the raider we killed earlier…the body kept frozen anyway, but just this once

>We can’t afford to keep this prisoner fed, let’s put him out of misery and make use of the meat

>We can‘t feed three people, I‘m sorry but the third pawn we took in need to die…it‘s just us two now.

Needless to say that by the time the snow thawed we‘d done countless things that would continue to haunt us. And needless to say before the second winter came I made damn sure to be more prepared than I was for the first one.
