Update: the new audio/subtitle menu stopped derailing movie night (what helped on our TV)
Follow-up to my rant earlier this week about the player update on our living room TV. I kept pulling up the audio/subtitle menu by accident when I only wanted to pause or scrub, and it turned into a silly game of whack-a-mole during family movie nights.
Things are much better now after a few small changes.
I realized I was treating the directional pad like a timeline shortcut. With the new layout the bottom row is a minefield, so now I hit pause first, then scrub. That tiny habit change cut down the accidental subtitle popups a lot.
I turned subtitles on on purpose for a couple of nights. Sounds backwards, but it stopped the constant on/off toggling because everyone could still follow along when a kid asked a question or I had to step into the kitchen. Once I stopped fighting the menu I barely noticed it.
The biggest improvement came after a restart (full power cycle of the TV, not just backing out of the app). The button focus felt less jumpy. I don't know if an app updated in the background or the restart did the trick, but the controls felt more predictable afterward.
Not saying this will fix it for everyone, but we went from multiple accidental subtitle menu opens per episode to maybe one the whole night. Anyone else see it calm down after a restart or after getting used to the new control flow?
