bunq just charged me €49.99 “compliance fee” after locking my account for 11 days. Is this legal in the Netherlands?
I need to vent.
Been a bunq customer for almost 2 years. Never any issues. Then last week they randomly freeze my account “for review.” No email, no push notification, just greyed out balance and “contact support.”
Support? A slow chatbot that eventually tells me to upload passport + proof of address + source of funds for my own salary. Fine, I send everything. Radio silence.
Eleven days later my account unlocks… and I get hit with a €49.99 “manual review fee.” Yes, really. For them fucking up and holding my rent money hostage.
I asked for an explanation and they sent me their terms & conditions link. That’s it. No apology, no refund.
This is the same bank that brags about being “the bank of the free” and “disrupting traditional banking.” Turns out their disruption is just taking your money and giving you worse service than ING.
Anyone else been hit with these random “compliance fees” or surprise account locks lately? Or am I the only one getting robbed in 2026?
Thinking of reporting them to AFM or just moving everything to a real bank. This fintech fantasy is getting expensive.
TLDR: bunq locked my account for 11 days then charged me €50 for the privilege. “Bank of the Free” can fuck off.
