Drivetrain Compatibility Check for SF Hills: Tiagra 4700 shifters + GRX RX400 RD + SRAM PG-1050 Cassette?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently putting together a drivetrain upgrade for my Bianchi Volpe. I live at the very top of a hill in San Francisco, and my main purpose for this upgrade is to make life easier when climbing. A rider friend of mine recommended this specific setup to help me tackle the SF inclines without burning out.

I've bought the parts based on some initial research, but before I throw everything on the workstand, I wanted to do a quick sanity check to ensure I'm not missing any weird spacing or pull-ratio issues.

Here is what I am planning to pair together:

  • Shifters: Shimano Tiagra 4700 (10-speed)
  • Rear Derailleur: Shimano GRX RD-RX400 Rear Derailleur 2x10 Speed
  • Cassette: SRAM PG-1050 (10-speed, 11-36t)

From what I gather, it should work because:

  1. The Shifter/RD pull ratio matches
  2. The Cassette spacing matches

A couple of quick questions for the SF riders and gear heads:

  • Has anyone run this exact setup? Are there any weird shifting hiccups I should look out for, or does it shift crisp across the whole block?
  • For the front derailleur setup, can I stick with my stock Tiagra

Appreciate any advice or confirmation before I get grease on my hands! Thanks!

Moving up from a Square: GW9400 vs GPR-H1000 (and Mudmaster confusion?)

Hey everyone,
I’ve been rocking a standard Casio Square (GW5000U-1) for a while, but my job and lifestyle are starting to demand a bit more from my gear. I work outdoors consistently—running ropes courses, archery ranges, bit of kayaking, day hikes and indoor rock climbing. I also bike to work and spend time leading overnight camps up near Hetch Hetchy, where we swim, hike, and all of the above.

I’m looking for something that won't be a pain to maintain. I’m currently looking at:

My Questions:
Charging: I really don’t want to be tethered to a cable. For the GPR-H1000, can it run indefinitely on Solar alone (like the 9400)? Or is the cable still a requirement?

Mudmasters: I’ve skimmed them but there are so many models. I need Multiband 6, Solar, ABC sensors, and 20 Bar WR. Is there a specific Mudmaster that fits those specs and is "thin" enough for climbing/archery? How often do these need to be manually charger?

Digital vs Analog: I don’t have a strong preference, but for those of you who work with gear (ropes/carabiners), do you find the Analog hands/protruding crowns of the Mudmasters get in the way more than the Digital Rangeman?

Final note: The H1000 intrigued me with the Strava compatibility, as I am training for a sprint triathlon, but I don’t think its a necessity.

Any insights from people who actually work in the dirt/water/rocks would be huge. Thanks!
