Manager Question: Employee Broke Policy the One Weekend I Trusted the Team Without Me There

I’m a stock manager / fulfillment supervisor managing a team of 6 in a warehouse. Every Friday I hold short meetings where I ask the team for feedback and suggestions. Recently, they asked for more overtime, so I worked with my boss and got approval for us to work a Saturday even though we normally don’t work weekends.

Unfortunately, I got sick and couldn’t make it in, but my team lead (Felipe) was there supervising.

Later, one of my employees told me that another employee (Grace) started loudly playing music in the warehouse, even though company policy doesn’t allow it. Apparently she was saying things like “there’s no bosses here today” and “we have free will today.” The music reportedly went on for about 30 minutes until operations managers showed up.

The employee who told me asked me not to involve his name because he’s worried about creating tension with the team.

To add more context, Grace already has a pattern of fulfillment mistakes and frequently gives very last-minute notices when asking for days off, which makes scheduling difficult.

My questions are:
- Should I handle this privately myself first?
- Should I involve HR or my boss immediately?
- Should I address only Grace, or remind the whole team about expectations too?

I try to be supportive and fair with my team, which is why this situation is frustrating because I went out of my way to create overtime opportunities for them, and this happened the one weekend I wasn’t there.
