[May 17, 2026] Update: that weird grid shape yesterday actually helped

Quick update to my mini freakout yesterday about the odd puzzle shape from May 16, 2026. I went in expecting it to be a gimmick, and almost bailed since I was trying to squeeze the solve between client calls (side hustle life) while my phone kept buzzing with spam.

Turns out the shape was exactly what I needed. It forced me to stop skimming and actually work the crossings more deliberately. Once I accepted that the flow had to be different, the fill started coming together cleaner than I thought it would.

Spoilers for May 16, 2026 below.

>!What clicked was treating each little section as its own mini-puzzle. If I got stuck, I jumped to another area, picked up a couple of easy gimmes, then came back. That kept me from getting tunnel vision and locking in wrong letters. I also noticed the short answers were pulling more weight than usual, so I stopped trying to brute force the long entries first.!<

>!I was also wrong about it being unfairly clued. A few clues felt vague at first, but once I had more crosses they made sense. Mostly it was my impatience and the strange layout throwing me off.!<

Anyone else hit a puzzle where the grid annoyed you at first but actually improved the solve once you leaned into it?
