The author of {Vices & Veritas by Alina Haris} rewrote the first few chapters after receiving feedback after publishing! I haven't read the updated work yet so I don't know how it is but I do respect that they chose to improve reader experience and reworked their book after getting reviews about choppy writing in the first parts of the book. It's especially hard as a self-published author because you don't really have access to professional editors and proofreading and your ARC/Beta-readers tend to be yes-men so your real feedback comes from after publishing. This is especially admirable because it reminds me of how I once wrote a negative review on Goodreads for a book by an author popularly recommended on this subreddit (should I name them?) and she blasted my review on social media so she and her fans could bully me. She regularly does this to people who leave 1 star reviews so maybe you know who I'm talking about already 😐

Anyway, back to the point. How do you feel about authors reworking their published stuff?

Personally I am in two minds about it. On one hand I really hated that {God of Malice by Rina Kent} was rewritten to make it more "sanitized" after all the backlash and it also affected how she wrote the rest of her books and it was no longer authentic to herself. On the other hand I would actually love it if HC Dolores rewrote {Redmancy by HC Dolores} because it truly was a disappointing experience... I would definitely read a new version of the book if she decided to republish it 🥲

What books do you think would be better with a re-write?

Hi, a friend of mine will be visiting Japan for a few days and is looking for a temporary SIM card with SMS verification for concert tickets.

I have a connection with Ahamo as a resident. I don't mind registering the new SIM under my name and then giving it to my friend, but I can't find any service that provides residents with temporary phone numbers for around 14 days. (I can't use my phone number for her tickets since I already got mine and she needs to make a separate account)

I have a few that come to mind. I think gaslighting is my most favourite trope in a dark romance 😭 I need help lolllll. Basically looking for MMCs who try to isolate the FMC, tell her lies/half-truths to make her paranoid and distrust the people around her and keep her to himself 🫣 Feel free to read the following books ASAP if you haven't already 🥵 Bonus if there is noncon:

1. {Wicked Games by Zoe Blake}: The MMC makes her believe she lives in the Renaissance era by hiring paid actors and convinces her the real world doesn't exist 🤭

2. {Vices & Veritas by Alina Haris}: The MMC drugs her to make her paranoid about people around them so she is heavily reliant on him for safety and comfort and isolates her from everybody else. Very well written because he played on her insecurities well.

3. {Psychotic Obsession by Leigh Rivers}: same as Vices & Veritas but a lot more amped up but less psychological

4. {Gaslight Her by Quinn Blackbird}: dystopian but too short, I needed more. This one has an amnesia trope and he lies to her about their relationship and makes people around him lie about their life too.

5. Solaris by Ladyofvenus (AO3): MMC uses her secret drug addiction to make her reliant on him and convinces her that her friends and family wouldn't accept her the way he did because nobody would love a drug addict.

6. The Community by deathsdoll (AO3): great gaslighting!! However I didn't like the age gap/intense daddy kink in The Community. Unfortunately her daddy issues were a major plot point, however I enjoyed reading this regardless because of all the psychological games he played.

7. If I Can't Have You by deathsdoll (AO3): again, top tier psychological games!! However the story got repetitive and boring after the big reveal.

8. Imperium by moonlightdreams234 (AO3): Another amazing recommendation, but it's a WIP 😭 Her foster brother isolates her for himself by making her believe her parents don't care about her and he also influences the kids at school to not be friends with her so she has nobody to rely on for comfort except him.

9. {Stalking Ginerva by Gigi Styx}: He's her sweet ex-boyfriend tormenting her as her masked stalker. He's trying to induce fear in her so she comes running back to him for safety 🫣

I don't know if I'm being pranked by all the good reviews this book got because did we even read the same book? I guess there was a full-fledged ARC marketing on instagram that caught my eye and gave me potentially biased reviews...

The story and writing was too chaotic, there was no proper flow, the characters were super weird. The plot made no sense. This book felt like another one of those books where the authors just list out the tropes and stitch them together rather than actually pay attention to the plot/story 😐

Spoiler: >!The murder was soooo unnecessary!! He's just a hockey player, not some mafia boss and Thomas was just an innocent man. Murders in dark romance are so overdone oh my god, just because it's a DR, doesn't mean you need to make the MC commit murder out of character and when there is no requirement to the plot. Also the fact that she slept through EVERYTHING without drugs lmao girl you need to get checked out because what... And having two big and separate villains is just overkill because there is no depth with why and how they were doing what they were doing!<

So so disappointed by this book... I checked their goodreads and the author already has 163 ratings for an unreleased book that she will release in August with most "reviews" being 5 stars just for its potential of being a good book 😐 Tired of being disappointed by Booktok 😭

I need an incompetent FMC who isn't the smartest in the room, she's a social climber/ambitious and gets what she wants (maybe a promotion or a scholarship) by using "other" means - maybe her body, or falsifying documents, or scamming, anything. Of course the MMC can find this endearing and even helps her out 😉😉

The setting can be academic/career-related, either works. Just need an FMC that isn't perfect, is morally grey and isn't afraid to use all the resources at her disposal to get to the top 🫣 It's fine if she's hesitant to do it but does it anyway because her ambition outweighs her guilt

Closest I've found is Poppy from {Limerence by HC Dolores} but the second book in the duet was too disappointing and the characters really fell off 🫠
