Hi all, I've been invited to join a lab at Tsukuba as a Research Student this December. My family needs a realistic monthly budget for rent and food in Tsukuba before we lock it in. What are you guys actually spending per month? also what is it like studying there?
Would be great if I could talk to an Indian living there.
Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,
I’m an international applicant ( Stats student from India) interviewing next week for a Research Student/Master's position at a Japanese AI & Optimization lab.
The professor has already given me a clear technical agenda for the 1-hour Zoom interview:
- A 10-minute presentation on my background and research.
- A technical deep-dive (explaining a core math concept in plain English).
- A critique of one of his recent NeurIPS papers (discussing limitations/improvements).
- Behavioral questions on handling research uncertainty and coding bottlenecks.
I feel confident about the technical preparation, but I’d love some insight into the "soft" expectations and cultural nuances of interviewing with Japanese academia:
- Formality: Is a full suit and tie expected for a Zoom interview, or is a formal shirt sufficient?
- Tone: Western interviews often favor heavy self-promotion. I've heard Japanese labs prefer a balance of confidence and humility. How should I navigate this, especially when critiquing his own paper?
- "I don't know": If he asks a math/coding question slightly outside my domain, what is the most culturally respected way to handle it without sounding defensive?
- Any hidden red flags that Japanese PIs look out for in international students?
Any insights from current MEXT scholars or folks in Japanese graduate programs would be massively appreciated!
