First They Came - US version
First they came for the undocumented
And I did not speak out
Because I had papers
Then they came for the immigrants
And I did not speak out
Because I was born here
Then they came for the Muslims and others
And I did not speak out
Because I was not one
Then they came for the africans, asians and other minorities
And I did not speak out
Because I believe they are protected by the Constitution
Then they came for the gay, bisexual, and LGBTQ people
And I did not speak out
Because I thought their rights did not affect me
Then they came for women’s freedom over their own bodies
And I did not speak out
Because I thought those choices were not mine to defend
Then they came for the poor and the homeless
And I did not speak out
Because I believed poverty was a personal failure
Then they came for the universities, students, and protestors
And I did not speak out
Because I only wanted stability
Then they came for the citizens who “looked suspicious”
And I did not speak out
Because I believed mistakes only happened to others
Then they came for me
And by then, fear had taught everyone
To stay silent
